Short Preview for GBL in 2008

Amit Patel was in attendance at the Silver Sox game last night. He spent a couple of minutes with Darrell Moody of the Nevada Appeal. Here is what Darrell related of the conversation in his article today:

Amit Patel, the co-founder of the GBL was in attendance. He said that the league turned a small profit this season, and he said that he hopes the league can expand next season by two teams.

So some positive news to end the regular season. I know it is possible to simply dismiss this as grandstanding on the part of Patel, but in conjunction with what Kevin said in another post, it is encouraging to hear. Eight teams, a profitable league, three years of experience under their belt--2008 is shaping up to be a good year!

If the league made a profit by selling two teams for seven-figures it's no wonder that the executives are trying to get two new teams on board for 2008. What a great business model.
Sell two, start two and repeat.
You can see where this is going however. Attrition is bound to catch up to them when the league can no longer expand and/or sell. Also the league turned a profit in a year in which it cut one club, didn't host an All-Star game and had a terribly unbalanced schedule to favor its California cash cow. Meanwhile it got younger (read: cheaper) had fewer games and used local officials in many cases instead of professional league-rotating umpire crews. I for one will hold the applause until I see Safeway and Vons re-up their deal which expires in November.

I agree with WrittenWord that the Safeway/Vons sponsorship is important! Or a new "Big" sponsor... It still boggles my mind why Reno cannot get the Big $ Casinos on board for Dugout or Centerfield Sponsorship ( $5k- 10k ), or other various promos to eliminate the costs to the league.. In Chico they have the team bus that has sponsorship on it from a Indian Casino if I remember correctly..

That being said the Reno 2nd half was awesome!! as far the the game day experience!!! Things next year should be great if Jacey stays with Reno..

Ben (Sox Radio Announcer) said on Saturdays broadcast that Les Lancaster told him that he will meet with the Sox/GBL this winter to determine if he will return to the Sox in 2008, according to Ben , Les has some questions for the Sox/GBL about the league & direction of the league.

I hope the new teams are in the North , new rivals for Reno...
