IMO a better scenario for a return of hockey to Kansas City would have been in the CHL rather than the UHL..

You need go no further than rivalries and history..

The Kansas City Blues were part of the old CHL and a lot of Kansas Citians have probably never heard of the UHL.. Granted.. The Blues were many many years ago..

Rivalries.. Would KC fans rather go see Tulsa.. Oklahoma City..
And the flat obvious in Topeka and Wichita..

OR go see Muskegon.. Adironack.. Elmira?
The only real rivalry could be with the St. Charles franchise..

Now maybe because of league setup or whatever..
Maybe the only option for the owner was the UHL.. I don't know..

But with both possibilities being available..
The CHL roster of teams would have brought more fans to the games..

The only minor hockey league that I would have wanted to come to Kansas City would be the AHL.

Bill:

who was Adironack?????? try Adirondack

Topeka has gone belly-up and the Outlaws owner had a hand in Ft. Wayne.

No way either would KC survive in the AHL, IT'S not the IHL nor is it a midwest league if the offices are in the Northeast.

I think an AHL team could survive in KC, it's just hard to get into the AHL right now with that league's requirement that an AHL team has to have an NHL affiliation.
Off-season affiliation changes forced some AHL franchises into the lurch (see Cincinnati).
I used to go to a couple of Blades games a year before the Thunder happened along in Wichita. With Topeka gone, Wichita needs a close rival and KC would fit that bill.
As far as two teams there are concerned, St. Louis has the Blues and the St. Charles team and neither seemed to suffer in the past. You have NHL and AHL teams in Philadelphia, Detroit and Chicago (but they are larger markets). Toronto is next.
I think the CHL is the best bet for KC to succeed. There would be a rival in the UHL with St. Charles and in the AHL with Omaha coming in.
We'll just wait and see.

The River Otters (St. Charles) had a good first year at the turnstiles, and have teetered on the brink from year 3 on.

You have NHL and AHL teams in ..... Detroit.

Uh, no. But one could hope.

My original post was from 2004 and more than a year old...

So I certainly didn't expect to see it....

I do see that Kansas City is not fielding a team in the UHL this year...
Wonder what happened there.. I haven't checked on the Outlaws since during the season last year..

Oh well.. I'll check.. lol

Sorry, I was thinking about the IHL Vipers (I think it was) but I guess they didn't survive the IHL demise.

Yeah, that's the main reason why the Kansas City Outlaws folded because of averaging 2,777 fans per game. I think hockey can succeed in Kansas City but I think the hockey fans in Kansas City just don't want a hockey team playing in Kemper Arena. I think an NHL team will be good for the Sprint Center.

Hockey can succeed in Kansas City... While the Blades of the IHL weren't the attendance leaders in the league.. They did allright.. Problem is, When the IHL was no more and teams jumped to the AHL, A rule in the AHL prohibited an owner from having multiple teams.. That meant that the owner of the Kansas City Blades and Grand Rapid Griffons had to get rid of one of his teams.. He lived in Grand Rapids..

NHL? LOL
Been to St. Louis, thought about Blues tickets.. But when the things were as expensive as an NFL game I thought different.... There just isn't enough of a core of hockey fans in Kansas City to go NHL..

Just as I posted originally... KC needs to go CHL..

Bill, are you saying that Kansas City should go after the NBA?

More importantly, what do you think they WILL get? It's admittedly hard for me to believe that the Sprint Center is being built solely as a second home for Jayhawks basketball. OTOH, when the Chiefs and Royals are already there, it's hard to believe that they built without having something in the pocket.

I think we've seen pretty close to the last attempt at locating "Big 4" league teams in towns where 2 or more other "Big 4" teams already exist.

Sorry it took so long Pounder... I haven't been to this message board for a while...

NBA in Kansas City? Who knows.... I do know a poll by the Kansas City Star put an NBA team at the top of the list.. Far ahead of Arena Football and NHL Hockey..

I'm a displaced Kansas Citian who WILL of course drive over 3 hours to see the Chiefs.. And the Wizards.. Rather see the T-Bones than the Royals.. But why when the Wranglers are here in Wichita.. Now I'm off track.. lol.. NO I wouldn't drive up to KC to see an NBA team.. And again WHY?.. I'd much rather see the Jayhawks or Shockers play college hoops.
I just may take a trip down to OKC to see the Hornets play.. But that trip would be more of the "Support NO" mentality than anything else.. Besides.. Not sure if there are any tickets left in OKC... They're trying to prove they're ready for a Major League team in Something. Which, Even though I have no links to, love for, or any support for.. Oklahoma City.. I think with their population base and the support many of their minor league teams get.. They're ready and deserving.

Bottom line. I think your Big 4 thoughts are right on the mark.
