Katz said teams will not use nicknames. The team playing in Ford Field will be known as Team Michigan. He said there haven't been any discussions about the coaching staff or team colors. He said helmets will be adorned with state abbreviations -- MI for Team Michigan.
I think that's a bad idea, nicknames give the team identity also, you can sell more merchandise.
What fans are going buy a team Michigan t-shirt.
The NBDL did the same thing when they formed but a couple of years later they came to their senses.

I agree. I was very disappointed to read that remark. And helmets (and logos, I assume) with just the state's post office abbreviation sounds lame to me. Merchandise sales always seems to be a big part of a team's bottom line and I don't see this as a good thing either.

So I guess I need a college degree to be allowed to WATCH this league as well?
Oh well....
And ditto on the stupidity of no team nicknames. At least the D-League had nicknames for the teams.
Prepare yourselves for replicant mascots as well I guess....

No nicknames... official nicknames, that is, is okay, as long as the teams still have some type of idenity. Which is very hard, if they have no name or logo.
This is about to implode. I'm sure Purdue fans will have a hard time showing up to root for "Indiana" and the like.

Bad move. Wish they would have learned from the D-League's mistake.

But hopefully they'll learn.
For example, for the Tennessee team, I think they should be the Tennessee Hounds; tie-in to the school (Smokey, their dog mascot), but unique in its own way.

They won't last long enough to learn. The D-League was fortunate to have a very well-financed sugar daddy in the NBA so it could survive.

Mmmm, thats a good point. that was a bad idea. If the AAFL doesnt wake up they wont last long. Kickass identities draw in fans and TEAM MICHIGAN wont cut it.
