For all of the Pro Roller Hockey players. Professional Roller Hckey is making a comeback.

The MLRH is coming back next April.Grand Rapids, MI - Major League Roller Hockey (MLRH) has announced that they will, once again, be the only professional Inline Hockey League in North America when the puck drops on their 2008 Season.

“This will be the rebirth of professional inline hockey in the United States” says Chief Executive Officer Matthew O'Neill. “For several months we have been sharing our ideas with a number of associates throughout the hockey community, and we’ve determined that the time is right and this year is going to be something special.” MLRH will return to an April through August season and will remain the only full-contact roller hockey league world-wide. They will also continue their policy of only one team per major market. “It's the only way to present a high quality product” said O'Neill.

“Beginning play in April also allows us to take advantage of several minor league venues with enhanced seating. Additionally, it frees up the best hockey players, ice or roller, from college and pro teams as well as some of the established players currently playing in MLRH.”

A return to glory days

MLRH was founded in 1998 by entrepreneur Bill Raue. While MLRH operated successfully in it’s inaugural years (attracting as many as 10,000 fans at the Pond in Anaheim for it’s Championships), the league fell victim to the demise of a rival league and was brought down as pro roller hockey flamed out in 1999. “There were so many bad feelings when RHI folded with $40 million in losses that it was virtually impossible to play at the professional level,” said Raue.

MLRH has operated throughout the Midwest and Eastern seaboard playing with primarily amateur players. “It was a good way to keep our name in front of the public,” said Raue. “We had a lot of fun but, realistically, we were not going to get back to the Glory Days depending on some of the guys that drifted through the league. The partnering with a professional ice league will add professionalism and commitment.”

Under the agreement between Raue and the Elite Sports Group (ESG), Raue will retain the rights to MLRH Properties and remain involved with the league, primarily in a marketing and advertising capacity. “Matt O’Neill has a vision, great enthusiasm and a solid track record in business and I will do all I can to help him make it happen,” said Raue.

The announcement of the 2008 MLRH Professional Season, has been a surprise to some inline hockey enthusiasts based across North America, but to the ice hockey brass, it has just been a matter of time. “It was nice to be able to have our guys keep in shape over the summer months, while being able to play in their hometown” stated a former United Hockey League Head Coach. “I didn't have to worry about the guys that were playing MLRH or RHI coming back to camp 15 - 20 pounds overweight. They came back ready to play.”

O'Neill added, “We are working on a national television deal with a sports cable network and are hopeful that the 2008 MLRH Finals will be broadcast nationwide, with additional game of the week broadcasts in regional spots. We will play with 8-10 teams in major markets but they will be very, very good teams and a hugely entertaining product.”

Elite Sports Group partner, David Vernier, will serve as the Commissioner for MLRH. “Dave is going to be our guy that puts a great plan into place; he was great at getting our camps and tournaments off the ground throughout the Midwest.”

Vernier will be in charge of day to day operations of the league, including acting as a liaison between the numerous ice hockey Players Association’s and MLRH, as well as working closely with the owners and players of Major League Roller Hockey. “Dave is going to focus a lot of time and energy expanding out product across North America,” said O'Neill.

League officials indicate that, to increase the competition, players will be paid for every win and receive a lesser amount for losses. Coaches will be paid with incentive contracts as well. Play begins on April 19th with the ESG Cup Finals set to wrap up the weekend of August 15 th.

My god, talk about revisionist history...

This is a Bill Raue run league, take one look into the disorganized mess that is the MLRH AAA and the LONG list of people who have quit the league due to his imcompetance and egotripping and you will see that this has no chance of flying.

This from a man who will not be in the organization in a month guaranteed. If they were so high on pro hockey then why have they kicked the teams that tried to compensate their players out of the league?

“Beginning play in April also allows us to take advantage of several minor league venues with enhanced seating. Additionally, it frees up the best hockey players, ice or roller, from college and pro teams as well as some of the established players currently playing in MLRH.”

You will NOT get any college players until after they graduate as the NCRHA's rules on pro players have changed in recent years. In fact unless they get the NARCh stars they will see their already horrible product get worse.

This is TOTAL b.s. The ONLY team that drew in MLRH in it's only two pro seasons were the Bullfrogs who only played there because RHI suspended operations for one year.

POINT OF ORDER: RHI existed from 1993 to 1999 and MLRH was the rival that "brought everything down." It's 1997 season caused RHI to go into hiding for a year before they returned for one last crack at it in 1999. As for the bad taste in people's mouths, well Mr. Raue, is your decade on top of elite inline hockey any better? Have you had even ONE team show up to games on time let alone a team that any local house league team would destroy in a game?

Revisionist history: Just Say No.

Yeah yeah yeah Raue. Mike Killbreath thinks you have no credibility on ANY of those fronts.

Proof positive that the more he claims things have changed with MLRH, the more things have stayed the same. Raue remains boss but has yet another puppet "making nice" so everything is supposed to be happy. Wrong. Raue is going to refuse to give O' Neill a damn thing in terms of support, point the finger at him when things go bad, (which is almost always Raue's fault anyway but he shifts blame more than Cashman and Killbreath put together,) and expect O' Neill to be out of the league before the season is over. Just like all the others he has driven away.

Yeah like anyone in any of those leagues will play for this disorganized mess. Oh and unnamed quotes are code for Raue making it up.

I GUAR-AN-TEE that they will never get a game on TV. Raue has burned way too many bridges and nobody will take him seriously and even less people will take his latest hand picked puppet seriously either.

Elite Sports Group partner, David Vernier, will serve as the Commissioner for MLRH. “Dave is going to be our guy that puts a great plan into place; he was great at getting our camps and tournaments off the ground throughout the Midwest.”

All well and good if either of them had any power but they don't so it's all hot air.

Ah yes, the Players Association that is OWNED BY THE LEAGUE. Yes that PA that PLAYERS HAVE TO PAY TO GET INTO AND DON'T EVEN GET INSURANCE OUT OF THE DEAL. What a load of crap.

League officials indicate that, to increase the competition, players will be paid for every win and receive a lesser amount for losses. Coaches will be paid with incentive contracts as well. Play begins on April 19th with the ESG Cup Finals set to wrap up the weekend of August 15 th.

Now that sounds like Killbreath to me. It isn't but they are birds of the same feather. Bottom Line: Don't expect much if anything from this pipe dream as Bill Raue has ruined way too many people and hindered the sport way too much in his decade as the last man standing. It will take a Dennis Murphy or someone of the likes to get roller hockey going again so don't hold your breath.

The MLRH evolved from a six-team "Rollin' Thunder" tour in the summer of 1997 that was to be a barnstorming effort with European and North American teams. I think they originally tried to travel from city to city with their own inline surfaces. They quickly decided to develop a more traditional league concept with eight teams in two divisions:

Atlantic Division
New York Riot
Washington Power
Carolina Copperheads
Pennsylvania Posse

World Division
El Paso Rattlers (from the failed Continental Inline Hockey League)
English Lions
Scottish Celtic Storm
Irish Rovers

Because anyone with brains knows there's no money to be made in starting a league. :)

No league is better than a trainwreck league. Trainwrecks just scare anyone with brains AND money away from the sport outright. Then again, that's what Raue wants so he can OWN the sport at this level by devaluing it year in and year out.

I noticed on the league website they refer to the league many times as "the only professional Inline Hockey League in North America". What makes them any more professional than the PIHA? Heck, the "P" stands for "Professional". It's right there in their name. Just looking at the respective websites, the PIHA looks far more professional than the MLRH.

You are correct. While prize money is still a big part of earning in the PIHA, it's still head and shoulders above ANY Raue run MLRH franchise in it's 11 year history. As for the other stuff about being the 'only' pro inline league, more raue hyberbole that's about as legit as his claims that RHI came in to break up his league in 1998. (A year in which the RHI didn't even play...)
