..For the brawl and subsequent forfeiture by The Peanuts during the Music game.
League starting to get tough? (http://www.southcoastleague.com/news/?id=576)
Quick summary;
• Music OF Carlos Arroyo – 2 Game Suspension and Fined
• Peanuts RHP Mike Colacchio – 3 Game Suspension and Fined
• Peanuts 1B Brandon Woolard – 3 Game Suspension and Fined
• Peanuts Pitching Coach Buddy York – Fined
• Peanuts Manager Wally Backman – 8 Game Suspension
During Colacchio's and Woolard's suspensions will they have enough players to take the field? or will they serve their suspensions concurrently? ;)

Arroyo must be appealing his suspension, as he is playing in the game tonight.
Can't say as I blame him. If someone intentionally threw at me three times, I'd probably throw the bat at him. :mad: I'm surprised Blue didn't toss Collachio after the second plunk attempt.
This may surprise everyone coming from me, but I think Backman's eight game suspension is a bit much. Could be his past actions coming back to haunt him - some might say he has a bit of a reputation. :rolleyes:
Anyway, I haven't said this lately, but the SCL is doing a fantastic job - especially considering this is the first year of existence. I've been reading some of the other Indy forums, and there are some very unhappy fans out there.

Yeah, cussing on the field isn't a good thing, so why wasn't Garrison ejected and/or suspended and/or fined for his language on the field to Peanut's Buddy York? Saying "F" you and calling someone a fag__ot is not punishable? Or maybe they just didn't hear that or maybe they just didn't care because it was the home team afterall. Tempers were flared and things got out of hand and ALL should be held accountable. There is a true rivalry going on, I don't believe just for ticket sales, but maybe more underlying reasons. Backman is at least honest in his responses, unlike Plantier who, off the field, where the public can't see him, openly calls his players names such as co__ksuc__er, oh, and this was after their first loss on the road. You see, no one likes to lose

I think I heard that Collachio had started serving his suspension before it was made public. Taylor and Kim have played 1B for the 'Nuts in the last two games.

Yeah, after thinking about it you're probably right Nuck, The South Coast League and all the umps are biased against The Peanuts and Wally in particular. It may even be a.... conspiracy! :eek: That would explain the difference in punishments you cited, (It's us against them!!).
It seems the paranoia has spread to the fans :rolleyes:
What Phil Plantier does "where the public can't see him" is between him and the players. The whole point is that it was "where the public can't see him"! Not out in the middle of the field.
Although that whole story sounds fishy unless you have some very good inside info, (Music Player?), as The Tunes first (and second!) road loss was in Bradenton.:-D

As much as I hate to admit it, I also think that an 8 game suspension was a bit much for Backman's latest ejection. Looks like he will be behind the eight ball everytime he sets foot on the field to argue a call, but he was also the one who established that reputation in the first place.
As far as Plantier cussing, well, good luck finding a baseball manager that doesn't. The key was doing it away from the public. Public tirades, cussing out people in the pressbox during games, etc....that just doesn't cut it. Now I expect a manager to argue a call now and then and get heated and get ejected...that is part of the game.
But Backman brings publicity to a first year league and there is no denying his ability to manage and get the most out of his players to succeed on the field with wins and promotions to "organized" ball.
If he were managing the Music, I would probably take up for him more, but still be embarrassed by some of his antics. But he manages my teams "rival" (I don't hate the Nuts) and I think he is out of control....
Not much different from minor league hockey and the GREAT rivalry between Macon and Columbus. Those games kept the boards HOT!!!

I think you can "read between the lines" and see that Wally's suspension is a sign of the league's frustration with him.
It also sounds like he accepted full responsibility for the whole walking off the field incident, which after all, is unprecedented in professional baseball; Quote from League;
“The decision to forfeit a contest under any circumstances is not acceptable and all parties involved (coaching staff, players, umpires) understand that this will not be tolerated by the league.”
I think they did the right thing.
