JanSport president killed in car crash - Corvino joined company in 2004
Staff at JanSport in Greenville, WI on Monday mourned the sudden loss of company president, Michael Corvino, who died Saturday in a car accident near Danville, Calif.
Corvino, 46, joined JanSport in 2004 from a previous position within VF Corp., its parent company. He was based in San Leandro, Calif.
He was a frequent visitor to the Greenville factory, and staff members knew the outgoing president well.
When contacted Monday, officials in Greenville declined comment and instead released a statement from the corporate office, which said the company was "deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague."
According to a report published Sunday in the Contra Costa Times, Corvino lost control of his vintage 1970 Dodge Charger and crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Corvino worked for VF for 15 years, first in several sales and merchandising positions before taking the JanSport helm.
A native of Philadelphia, he attended the University of Maryland, where he was a linebacker on the football team from 1979 to 1982. He played for the Washington Federals of the USFL from 1983 to 1985.
Dave Gatto, president of VF's Outdoor Coalition, will oversee JanSport until a successor is named.
JanSport is the nation's leading backpack maker. It moved its headquarters to California in late 2004, but its apparel division remains in Greenville.
