I had the opportunity to take in a meeting in Birmingham, Alabama about the idea of starting a NEW Basketball League in the South East.
It was interesting ...
Here are some of the ideas:
Seeking to establish the league with teams that are represented by states which have collegiate basketball programs from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) http://www.secsports.com/
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee
League to be headquartered out of Birmingham, Alabama ...
Which is also the home for the Southeastern Conference (SEC)
Birmingham is also hosting The 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds

* Teams in Smaller Markets
* Min 10 Team League for 2008 Inaugural Season
* Max 16 Team League
* 2 Divisions of Equal Teams
* 30 Game Regular Season Schedule
* Season runs for approximately 3 months: April, May and June.
* Post-Season Playoff Format
* Mid-Season All-Star Game - 1st year in Birmingham, AL.
* League comprised of Former NCAA Div 1 players from (SEC) Schools.
* Roster exceptions for Non-D1 players
* 3 Regional Combines - 1st combine to be held in Birmingham, AL.
There was some discussion on how to distinguish itself from other basketball leagues across America.
Some of the questions were:
Some of the leagues use a 24 second shot clock ... Should we reduce it, to speed up the game?
Some of the leagues have an interesting scoring system ... Should we come up with our own unique scoring rule(s)?
What's the best measurement to utilize for a league wide 3-Point Line? FIBA, NBA, NCAA?
Feel free to comment here in the General Basketball Forum ...
I came out of the meeting feeling fairly optimistic about the early direction of how the league wants to organize and operate itself.
The proposed league is in the process of scheduling a tentative meeting upcoming in August, to be held in Birmingham, AL.
This will allow league executives and potential ownership entities to get more acquainted with each other ... and talk a little Minor League Basketball.
For those who may be interested in finding more about this NEW league, please send me a PM.
I'd ask that you leave the following information:
