The NWPBL (New World Professional Basketball League) is also looking to begin next spring. Another league is the UBL. (United Basketball League) They are kicking off their season April of 2008. Do we have to many minor leagues? What is the overall state of minor league basketball in this country??

Both of the leagues you mentioned were supposed to have started this past spring, but I don't think either actually had a single owner besides the one that began the league. The NWPBL actually published a schedule when it didn't even have owners for the teams! The Universal League was also supposed to start - I highly doubt any of those three will ever play a game.
The USBL is probably dead, so unless a legit new league starts (Dodge City, Oklahoma, Kansas), the IBL is probably the only spring league that will play next season....

The United Basketball League is different than the defunct/never got off the ground Universal Basketball League.
The United Basketball League looks to be largely based in Texas.
I think the remaining USBL teams should merge to the IBL. Compared to the USBL, WBA and the ABA, the IBL smells like a rose.

I agree that Dodge, Okla, and Kans should go IBL - it would be better for the teams and the IBL would be better for having those three franchises

And except for another scrimmage or two in Austin, the United League will never get off the ground.

The United Basketball League originally started out as the Regional Basketball League. In addition to Texas, the league has teams planned for cities in Missouri, Louisiana and Arkansas, among others.

As everyone knows, we have been dormant for a couple of years-regrouping from the problems we had in owning all the teams. Several teams that were in the league were pursued by other shameful leagues and had a special kind of "american" koolaid poured down their throats. Anyway, bottom line is we have spent hundreds of hours studying the state of spring basketball as well as working with members of other sports leagues who played in "alternative" seasons. We now believe we have the "formula for success". We refuse to get into "wee wee contests" to see who has the biggest and most powerful "whacker" and will let the other spring leagues-who we contacted about making a league similar to the United Soccer League-do what they will. Our fees for our spring season is $4500 and that is rebated to the owners as teams are added in his "travel" market-in order to cut expenses on road games. We already have the operations manuals, rule books, and custom made basketballs. We know the problems in running a team and the cash flow problems encountered. The GBA will be a TRUE developmental league-developing referees, players, timekeepers, marketing reps, and even team owners to move on to the next step. We wont be going public. We dont work out of our basement. We dont eat at McDonalds every morning. We dont need a toupe. We dont call everyone shameful. We dont write bad checks. We dont take teams from another league. We dont have teams from around the world. We will be changing the website to teams of our own choosing-so dont cry about some of the familiar names you see-it is just to keep some CEOs on their toes. All teams will be close to each other. Lets all try to save minor league basketball in our own way. Email us with questions directly office@gbahoops. com Dont forget our troops in the Middle East or out POWs in Asia-finally God Bless America-we need it now more than ever.

We have partially updated the website. We are close to finalizing teams in Tennessee and Arizona. Our tryouts will begin in January in order to form 2 traveling teams until our season begins. We have been approached by teams in another league -whose reputation is that teams fold quickly-to be available to play against them. We will be announcing a new sports executive that is joining us shortly.
Tryouts will be in 12 cities. For the record, I met with PlayONsports-a division of Turner Sports-about the same deal the ABA had-for us, it was not a good deal for us. We have been working on the same project for 7 years-first with Don King and then deep discussions with them. We decided to go forward without them. I will say that the ABA did have to come up with some $$$$.
By the way, some teams names will changed as some were put up simply as targeted cities. We also have approached other leagues about interplay with no response. Go figure.

Just an update on the GBA -we have targeted major cities for tryouts beginning January 2008 -not only to get a head start on getting the best players available for the teams in the league but to also form 2 traveling teams. We have already agreed to "barnstorm" against teams in Texas and North Carolina touting the GBA message but we have been approached by a couple of team owners in the "red, white, and blue" league about possibly filling in for opponents who cant make the scheduled date-sounds "mean spirited" to me. Any teams who may wish to bring us in should contact us at office@GBAhoops.com Anyway, we have agreed in principle to having a team in West Virginia and are close on several other markets. We also hope to announce the addition of a long time minor league sports executive and team owner to organization next week. Oh, by the way, the GBA will NOT be adding teams unless EVERYONE on the GBA Executive Committee agree. Yes, we do have a real office in a commercial zoned area-so here is to all you "shameful" people.

That's pretty interesting ...
I wonder how much advance notice GBA teams will receive to act, as a stand in, so that a regular season scheduled game in the 'red, white & blue' league can get played???

we are actually starting to put together plans for a "touring" team in the southeast, midwest, and west due to problems in the red, white, and blue league. we thought tours would not be needed until january. the touring teams to replace noshow teams on schedules will be affordable and fan friendly. any team wishing to book the gba touring teams or players wishing to tryout should contact us office@GBAhoops.com
