View Full Version : Frustration in San Diego

From the latest Shockwave release:
Now, the first-place, top-seeded Pacific Conference Shockwave await perhaps their most difficult opponent, the NIFL's dysfunction and the many teams not relishing the opportunity to play them. "We match-up well against anyone and don't care who we play in the playoffs. We're shooting for the championship," added Edwards.
As the Shockwave faithful patiently await direction on what the playoff's hold, we urge you to stay informed by going to the team website at www.sandiegoshockwave.com; (http://www.sandiegoshockwave.com;) or by calling 877.SHOCWAV (877.746.2928 ) for more information.
And from the Union-Tribune:
“I'm upset,” said Sprowls, who has already shown signs that the Shockwave will shift leagues next season. “We've had a successful season, and it's very frustrating that the league hasn't been able to put it together.”and
Sprowls arranged air travel to Fayetteville, N.C,, for a title game on July 14 against the Guard, the top team from the East. Under this scenario, that would the one and only playoff game.
However, there could instead be a semifinal matchup against Wyoming. As the top seed, the Shockwave would be the home team on July 14. Then again, the Cavalry has told Sprowls that it may not wish to travel.
“I was eager to have the home-field advantage, but not if it comes down to not playing at all,” Sprowls said. “They have to pay for us to go there. Otherwise, why should we give up our home field?”
Sprowls is asking for travel expenses and a split of the gate should the Shockwave play in Casper. Shockwave coach Bob Bees expects to conduct a team meeting tomorrow and otherwise follow a typical schedule for a week without a game, not unusual for the club, which had three road games canceled this season.
Another possibility is no postseason at all “The way the season's gone,” Bees said, “the only thing we know for sure is that we'll be back in San Diego next season.”
The Shockwave originally announced at a home game on June 23 that it would host a playoff contest on July 14. Those plans called for eight teams in the postseason, but that format crumbled when the likes of Beaumont (Texas) opted not to participate.
And from the Casper paper:
"I want to play Wyoming," Sprowls said. "If they want to play us, we'll play them. That's it. I want to play them.
"If we have to come up there and play them, (we'll do it) if they just pay for us to get up there and pay for everything when we're there. The thing is, I don't want to spend $15,000 to play them. I'd rather spend ($25,000) and have them come down here."
It really looks as if San Diego might be on the outside looking in, a shame for a team that had only one hiccup this season. At this point, the only certainty about the NIFL season is that Fayetteville is the best team and deserves to host the championship game. Here's hoping they get a shot to play a title game.

Well said and we all agree.
We don't care who we play...when we play...or where we play..but we would like it better if it were in the 'Ville....One thing is for certain, whomever has the unfortunate position of travelling here should it turn out that way--know that you are about to endure the absolute worst noise you have heard on top of your bench and in your huddle all season. IT WILL BE CRAZY! Best advice is to get earplugs in tightly and to rehearse some hand signals upfront.

And the soap opera rolls. Like sand through the hour glass, so are the days in the NIFL. Hopefully next year they will get things turned aroung and get in a league that is more stable. Why they can't get things worked out on somewhere to play that game reminds me of Wyoming deciding to play in the NIFL another year insted of going to the UIF with the Outlaws. But that's what you get when you let a woman run a football team... Mr. Layton needs to grow a pair and start to make some of the decisions down there in Casper.

So Fayetteville has clinched an Indoor Bowl berth...They'll play against either Wyoming or San Diego...
Good thing there will be NO professional teams in the NIFL for 2008...

That's pretty much the prevailing thought. Don't know how it is going to work right now, but the Guard holds the cards.

I can't let that slide without rebuttal.
The Cavalry have been an exceptionally well-run organization for 8 years now - a very respectable record considering the hundred or so indoor football teams that have come and gone in that time (almost all of whom were run by men). In that time they've never forfeited a game, they've always paid their players, and done right by their fans and community.
She made a very bad decision to stay in the NIFL this year - as did the man that runs the Fayatteville Guard. I think she is about to make another very bad decision to join the AIFA's ill-advised expansion, the same mistake that the man who runs the San Diego Shockwave is about to make.
But these are relatively minor mistakes compared to many of the mistakes that a whole lot of men have made in this league, but none of their mistakes have been attributed to their genitalia. Tony Pewonski, for example, has a long history of not paying his players or his rent. Not surprisingly, the Greensboro Revolution have recently reported that their players and coaches are not being paid. How far has the standards in the NIFL plummeted when the Revs are considered one of the 4 "stable" teams in the league?

The league has already been turned into a laughing stock and GC is one of the primary reasons. The NIFL next year should prove to be even funnier.

With no legitimate teams left. I think it'll fold in the middle of 2008...

San Diego only has Sprowls to blame for that one. According to Wyoming media, Sprowls and Layton tried to organize a game, but Sprowls was insisting on homefield advantage or $25,000 compensation.
His argument was that even though they split with Wyoming head-to-head, and Wyoming has the edge on points, he should get homefield because he has played and won more lopsided games against semi-pro teams than Wyoming has.
Layton's argument is that the owner's agreed before the season started that canceled and forfeited games against teams that fold midseason would not be counted against them - and she has this in writing. Of course, she could have set up a half dozen joke games against Colorado semi-pro teams anyway (she's already paid her players for those games), and that would have undermined San Diego's claim.
Apparently Fayetteville sides with Wyoming.
How's this for a compromise:
Both San Diego and Wyoming are willing to pay to travel to Fayetteville, but not willing to pay to travel to each other. Why don't San Diego and Wyoming both travel to Fayetteville and play their playoff game there on Friday the 13th, with the winner playing Fayetteville on Saturday?

I love the fact that you Wyoming fans can call the teams we played ( now look at the word PLAYED) better than your forfiet wins and of course all those great teams from Colorado! WOW those were great wins!
At least we played games or does Beaumont not count? Twice and we never scheduled semi pro teams or flag football teams or your neighbors peewee team! Unlike ahhhhhh Wyoming!
Facts be facts this was about money and because the Laytons are the leagues beloved butt kissers.
You hicks in Wyoming know that you haven't earned this, not this year.
I like the fact that one idiot from Wyoming has decided that the only reason we won the last time we beat Wyoming, that it was the officals who gave us the win. Nice touch seems like that you people have something to hide and are reaching for anything to justify that loss!
And now you start blabbing that you won 53-20 in week two, week two mind you and who has the longest winning streak besides Fayettville? AHHHHHH how about San Diego!
So put that on the board! TOUCHDOWN SHOCKWAVE!

Sprowls was insisting on homefield advantage or $25,000 compensation.
This seems like a very reasonable request. In the past, the traveling team would have only been reimbursed for $10,000. But with the distance they need to travel, this is not an unreasonable amount.
Unfortunately, away teams are paid to travel post season games. In your compromise, F'ville would need to pay two teams to travel. And then, the winners would be playing back to back without rest. That is exactly what we determined was unsafe for the players. Nice thinking outside of the box though...

If you ask me all 3 teams have some blame in this. If Wyoming and SD couldn't come to terms on homefield then Fayetteville should have been a moderator in the discussion. They have the right to be.. They could have said if you don't do it this way then we won't get it done. And if all 3 of them couldn't come to terms then why even have it. Now I don't know what the discussion was when these teams took control of their so-called destinies but I can't believe that playoff talk was left out of the discussion. If it was, it was a mistake. they should have seen that we would be here right now at this crossroads. I think most of us knew it a few months ago this was possible. Also to me it is interesting that the NIFL has had nothing to say for the past months and there lies the real blame.

Lessons Learned:
#1 - Randy Newman, IIRC, sang "It's Money That Matters" and made a small hit out of it. Randy perhaps deserves worship, even if he does love LA.
#2 - If you have to promise your fanbase that you're skipping leagues next year, AND, oh, name-drop some random letters and a number that seem to include a, f, and 2, don't be surprised if you get dumped on. Heck, there's even NIFL precedence for that. Of course, if you're having to promise that to the fan base, that might indicate how small that base is, or how loyal, or a combination therein.
#3 - It was the NIFL, it is the remaining three or four pirates. I'm shocked there's even a championship game being discussed.

What is this house of pain your mom's house? Does it have splintery bench seats and everyone next to you has tabacoo breath and is in need of a shower? And are they missing a couple front teeth? Do they carry a cardboard sign will work for a seat at the house of pain.
That is what I picture when you state the infamous statement (THE HOUSE OF PAIN) Does it also come with a echo? That way it would fill all of my hopes and dreams about you and the house house of of painnnnnnnn!
