They're all mildly amusing, but please enough is enough. We get it already. Let's stick to the issues and save the yuks for Open Mike Night at Chuckles.

Chuck has the right to say what he wants and whenever he wants and since the ABA has made a mockery of minor league basketball and organized basketball in general he like myself and others can mock the hell out of it.

I have read some of Chuck's non basketball writings. They are quite good.

As far as his opinions on basketball, he has been good. He's pretty funny too.

I love these "junior members" trying to censor folks.

Still not as funny as Chuck, though. Chuck is funny on purpose.

Please...enough of your crying...when Uncle Joe Newman can turn around that disgusting financial report then you may have something relevant to praise Newman about...

As a fellow journalist, I always give other folks in the profession the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has their own style of writing. Some have a light-hearted approach, others are as serious as a corpse. Chuck does have a knack with words, I will give him that. Let him do his thing.

Really - Chuck is a great writer and he is an equal opportunity mocker - he mocks other leagues as well. It just seems like he mocks the ABA because it is the league that provides the most fodder.

By the way, if you don't like his posts, simply do not read them.

I agree. I'm sure that everyone here does not care for my posts. So the same goes for them. And as far as mocking the ABA goes, that is one of the good points about boards such as this one. People can voice their opinion. That is their right to do so. If he or anyone else feels that something is not being done correctly, then they can go ahead and state as such.

And, scarily, many of Chuck's parodies teeter on being believable on their face as ABA-initiated announcements.

Truth is indeed stranger than fiction in the kitchen, but not always as funny...

Chuck does get off a good one now and then, but it does get annoying afterwhile. Its like he's trying out new material on a captive audience. Perhaps he's taking a creative writing class at the Community College? CarrotTop was amusing for awhile, but it does get old.

I'd rather read a good piece of satire from Chuck any day before reading someone else's recycled rant.

So Chuck's musings are the only reason people come to this ABA eulogy? If Chuck adds spice, rather than our re-fried rants, perhaps that either tells us that this board is useless, or that the ABA is useless. Or maybe both. Obviously Chuck has as many fans as the ABA has. Sure, Chuck can get a grin out of me, it's just really a sad state when someone on here can attract more attention with Creative Writing 101, than these rec league teams in this rec league can draw. For 2 years, I've been waiting for someone to answer the only question I've ever actually had here. How and why do people with a few dollars want to get mixed up in this basketball abortion? Are they oblivious to the documented facts over the last 7 years? Are they looking forward to failure? Do they require aggravation in their lives? Why does this happen dozens of times every season? Seeing that no team plays a complete schedule would be enough for me to run the other direction. What kind of mental stranglehold does this swindler Newman have over people? Is the ABA now working on a cure for cancer that will have investors lining up to be a part of? If we all ignore this crap league with insignificant teams and players, maybe it will just go away.

So Chuck's musings are the only reason people come to this ABA eulogy?
Oh, I'm sorry, I had no idea this was a eulogy. Allow me...

Friends, Romans, Toledo franchises, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Joe Newman, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their ratty toupees;
So let it be with Newman. The noble Chichest06er
Hath told you Newman promised you a franchise of riches:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Newman answer'd it.
Here, under leave of franchise tampering and the rest -
For Chichest06er is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men -
Come I to speak in Newman's funeral.

I could continue, but I think I'll save my Shakespeare rant for another message board. Wouldn't want to upset WHAFAN's delicate sensibilities...

If Chuck adds spice, rather than our re-fried rants, perhaps that either tells us that this board is useless, or that the ABA is useless. Or maybe both.

Naw, it's just the ABA.

Obviously Chuck has as many fans as the ABA has.

The ABA has fans? I know the WHA has fans, even though that league keeled over about 30 years ago...

Sure, Chuck can get a grin out of me, it's just really a sad state when someone on here can attract more attention with Creative Writing 101, than these rec league teams in this rec league can draw.

Creative Writing 101... Son, don't bring a spork to a knife fight.

You need to visit http://www.chuckthewriter.com before you start throwing those "Creative Writing 101" barbies around... Or maybe http://www.albanypats.com and click on the photo galleries - but then again, we're not griping about my photography skills, are we?

For 2 years, I've been waiting for someone to answer the only question I've ever actually had here. How and why do people with a few dollars want to get mixed up in this basketball abortion?

It's simple. They're given a basketload of promises by Joe Newman, the CEO of the American Basketball Association. They're told about how you can own your personal ABA franchise for $10,000 - or even less if you wish to take over an existing market that had failed in the past. They're told about being able to keep all their profits, all their ticket sales, without any requirement to pay dues or acquire letters of credit. They're given a spiel about how this league is a direct descendant of the ABA that once starred Julius Erving, Moses Malone and Rick Barry. They're given a spiel about how the ABA provides fan-friendly entertainment at affordable prices. They're told about how the CBA and the PBL and the D-League are illegal and immoral, and that the ABA has more ethics than a law library. And if a prospective owner tries to do any due diligence on the league, they are provided with a list of the ABA's greatest accomplishments - worldwide television deals, national ticket brokers, clothing deals, patriotic concerts, minority and distaff ownership, etc.

Are they oblivious to the documented facts over the last 7 years?

You said "only question." However, I'm in a cordial mood, so I'll answer this one too.

It's not that they're oblivious. Maybe they don't know about OSC, seeing as OSC is the only publication out there that actually is independent enough to show all the warts of the ABA, without fear of getting shut down (as the ABA Yahoo board was shut down a year or so ago because it posted materials that were against the image of the league that Joe Newman wanted projected). Or maybe they've read articles on the ABA at minorleaguenews.com, including an article on the 2006 ABA Great Eight tournament, written by and featuring photographs by - me, Chuck Miller.

Here, I'll even make it easy for you to find the article:

http://www.minorleaguenews.com/basketball/a/aba/features/2006/04/01.html

And for that matter, perhaps all they see are Joe Newman's press releases about this team joining and that team joining, and can't dig far enough to find the pressers about this team folding AND that team folding AND that team folding AND that team folding...

Are they looking forward to failure?

Geez, another question. You must have been a pain in the neck around Christmas time on Santa's knee.

I don't think it's that they're looking forward to failure - they simply dive in off the deep end and haven't figured out how deep the pool is - or if they can even swim in it. Essentially the ABA is 20 strong teams, 10 barely strong teams, and a bunch of market reservations. Don't let anyone else tell you different.

Do they require aggravation in their lives?

No, for that you would buy a franchise in the NIFL.

Why does this happen dozens of times every season?

Because the more teams Joe Newman recruits for the ABA that don't have that solid footing, the more teams collapse. And the solid teams that survive the season and realize that Joe Newman's been offering nothing but pie-crust promises - easily made, easily broken (qv. Mary Poppins), they decide that the ABA isn't worth the trouble any more and either join a solid established league (the CBA, the D-League) or form a league of their own (the PBL).

Seeing that no team plays a complete schedule would be enough for me to run the other direction.

Too bad you can't run when you're trapped in the league and Joe Newman demands that you fly out of your designated territory to play a game to cover another team that folded (see Pulphus, Denise).

What kind of mental stranglehold does this swindler Newman have over people?

It's a promise of money - a little down and a lot of return. I think Amway and Nu-Skin work on those same pretextures.

Is the ABA now working on a cure for cancer that will have investors lining up to be a part of?

Not unless you can cure cancer with a 3-D light and a red-white-and-blue basketball.

If we all ignore this crap league with insignificant teams and players, maybe it will just go away.

No, ignoring it just means that more suckers - er - investors are trapped in the web. We need to make sure that if anybody out there who wants to know more about this car crash known as the ABA checks OSC, they will find out PDQ about the DOA teams and NSFW e-mails received from the CEO in an attempt to CYA.

And if I can do that with humor, or satire, or with cold hard logic and facts, then so be it. If you have a dissenting opinion, so be it. If you don't like my posts, they're clearly marked with my name so you don't have to read them if they hurt your eyes and offend your delicate sensibilities.

But rather than just post the same rigamaroll about "Joe Newman's killing the ABA, what can we do about it," maybe there's room in this board for my posts. And yours too.

I guess that's why I'm Chuck the Writer... and you're WHA the FAN.

Let's put it this way... Chuck keeps appearing fresh because Uncle Joe keeps finding some semi-original rants with which to further dig his hole. Mostly, the parodies are a reflection into the soul of... well... does anyone really want to observe long enough to make THAT evaluation?

Here is the thing some fail to realize. Chuck's posts and satire are based on FACT!! Chuck is a basketball historian, and what he has said in his satire on the ABA includes things Joe has said in public press releases. There isn't anything false in there, he is just putting a creative spin on the fallicies of the league. Sports is fun, Chuck just makes the sometimes brutally stupid funny.
