View Full Version : CFL field layout aesthetics

Not happy with the CFL's field layouts across the league.
I want to see a uniform look regardless of which of the eight teams is hosting a game.
Edmonton had faint yellow markings on their field indicating the yardline numbers, and a 55 marked at midfield. Instead of having the letter G for the goal line Edmonton has 00. Stupid as hell.
Calgary has red and white goalposts. A red crossbar and two white uprights.
I want to see all teams have the same yellow colored goalpost. I want to see the same white color used and the same font and font size for yardline numbers. I want to see the letter C instead of 55 at midfield.
Toronto has the best setup. Make that the standard for all eight teams.
This is minor but it does piss me off.
Do it like the NFL so every field has the same identical look.
No, I don't give a crap about tradition so don't even start with that as an excuse.
Commonwealth's field layout (Edmonton) makes it look like a dump. Everytime I saw those huge yellow yardline numbers it reminded me that I might have to pee (the yellow color sprayed on the grass). The huge font size was done to appease senior citizens that can't see very well?
One word -- ugly.

No the yellow colour in Edmonton is done because the Eskimos colours are yellow. Besides, most of your posts seem to think you were expecting the NFL when you watch the CFL. This league is different and for good reason, they are not trying to be the NFL.
But yes Commonwealth is a dump using real grass as opposed to field turf. It looks terrible as fall/winter sets in and the grass yellows or has bald patches from overuse. But mostly its a dump because the Eskimos play there.
Also, Toronto has the worst field turf in the league. For some reason it generates a cloud of dust as a player runs on it. The excessive ads on the fields in Eastern Canada tend to be a distraction and are too much. In the West there are less ads as a rule on the field and it makes for a better product.
However, if you weren't happy with the CFL, there's a simple idea, don't watch. The CFL won't miss you, especially since you watched on a streaming broadcast (the link posted previously) that doesn't pay the CFL a dime. Plus, I'm not sure what commercials were inserted to the broadcast you watched, but the majority of the sponsors of the CFL aren't directed at you. So watch the NFL, be happy you can enjoy that slower style of football and forget the CFL exists. They certainly won't miss you.

I know that.

Not trying to be something for its own sake is not a good enough reason. The CFL has video replay and challenge calls just like the NFL.
The yellow numbers are an eyesore.

A torn up field looks tough. I don't have a problem with that. I do have problem with the yellow numbers.
I have a problem seeing the ball sail through the goalposts at Calgary and Wisconsin Badger games. Get out a can of paint and paint that yellow because it would look tough painted yellow. It would be easy to see the ball sail through the uprights.
When there's a crowd of folks dressed in red and white seated behind the goalpost, it is extremely hard to see the ball sail through a red and white goalpost.
Again, this isn't even game system improvements. It's freakin' aesthetics!

The articial grass at the local high school here does the same thing. That's probably by design to prevent the players' skin from getting carpet burn.

Agree. Get rid of those board barriers with ads. I want to see the cheerleaders legs and more closeups. I didn't see that in the telecasted games.
However, if you weren't happy with the CFL, there's a simple idea, don't watch.
That really solves the problem, eh? The other alternative is to express one's view and push for change.
For a season opener, there were a lot of empty seats in Toronto and Edmonton on Thursday night. I would think the parking lots should have been jammed with tailgating and the place should have been packed.
The CFL won't miss you, ...
You speak on behalf of the CFL? I would think the CFL would love more enthusiastic fans.
...especially since you watched on a streaming broadcast (the link posted previously) that doesn't pay the CFL a dime.
I would think the Marion Mayhem of the CIFL would be very concerned since I stayed home to watch the CFL. If the CIFL had a local playoff game on Thursday night and I stayed home, that would hurt the CIFL not the CFL.
I didn't watch last night because logistically that wasn't possible. They didn't get my dime last night with or without ebahn.tv.
They will get my dime when I order online a black CFL baseball cap with that red football in the middle of a few red maple leafs, or an Alouettes t-shirt. They'll also benefit by my advertising of the league when I walk around my American town with their league logos prominently displayed on my shirt and cap.
Plus, I'm not sure what commercials were inserted to the broadcast you watched, but the majority of the sponsors of the CFL aren't directed at you.
And your point is?
Actually, there were replacement ads dubbed over Canadian ads such as credit card debt, crazy like a fox home businesses, health insurance, and an occasional US Army ad. I would have preferred to see ads that didn't apply to me just for kicks to see what Canadian culture looks like.
I do eat hamburgers so I was a little shocked Wendy's Hamburger ads were probably dubbed over as well.
So watch the NFL, be happy you can enjoy that slower style of football and forget the CFL exists.
I'm multi-talented and have multiple interests like everyone else. I like both leagues. Like the NFL, I see areas for improvement in the CFL. My suggestions in the CFL were extremely minor and not life changing like overhauling the game system.
They certainly won't miss you.
You speak on the CFL ownership's behalf? Lots of empty seats on Thursday night.

Season openers are notoriously bad attendance. The game in Toronto was especially poorly attended because the start time was 6:30 PM. In Toronto anything earlier than 7:30 PM on a weekday night is a bad idea. As for the game in Edmonton, its more than likely a reaction to the poor performance the team put on last year, coupled with the loss of a few major vets. Plus Commonwealth Stadium, never, ever sells out as it seats in the neighborhood of 70,000. So there will always be empty seats there.
On the other hand, last night in Montreal there was a sellout crowd and the stadium was full (until a torrential rain storm chased half the crowd out). Next week watch the Riders/Stamps from Mosaic Stadium, I expect a near sell-out crowd unless the weather is bad.
In fact I do speak on behalf of the CFL ownership, as I am a proud owner of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Since the Riders are a community owned team and I plunked down $200 to own a share of the Riders, I am indeed an owner of the team. This deal is not like the shares of the Packers, with my share I can vote in the members of the Riders Board of Governors, as well as attend the Annual General Meeting where I can vote on the numerous issues surrounding the Riders.
