A1 what is Chichester wanted for? Also. Head ref's should need to be paid in cash. Hey in BSN the ref's including Jack Nies who is an NBA ref and every June shows up for the BSN (Note 38th season reffing in the BSN) Joe Forte and Michael Henderson whom are also NBA Refs that work for the BSN from June till the end get paid one way. A check from the league. and always in direct deposit

If you're going to have nominations for the Wall of Shame, let's add Stephanie Roach and Orrys Williams and Sally Anthony to the wall. And just for giggles, let's add Bill Corona to the wall as well.

Oh oh... I feel a song coming on...

(cue David Gilmour on guitar)

We don't need no Tom Chichester
We don't need no Crazy Joe
No 3-D point rule in the scoresheet
Leave them ten grand checks alone
Hey! Newman! Leave them checks alone!
All in all it's just another team off the wall.
All in all another failed franchise off the wall.

(cue David Gilmour on solo guitar)

Yeah, being an idiot and getting killed on message boards every time you post on them aren't against the law.

Hmmm...

ABA Wall of Shame?

Man, that is gonna have to be a big wall.

One of the better ABA weirdnesses over the years was Team Native America.

Going to play in Albuquerque. Owner was up for assault charges, late on his apartment rent, found riding a bicycle around town by a journalist. Stole money from cancelled tryouts throughout the country, held one tryout in Espanola, New Mexico, told everyone they had to show up at that one, and then tried to move the team to Toronto. Rode around the country on a train. Awesome con-man stuff. Joe was angry at this fellow's "shameful" behavior.

However, my favorite ABA Wall of Shame moment is actually an ever continuing "Shameful" ABA tradition.

The power rankings.

I love how random, punitive, and "mean-spirited" they are.

I remember people dropping out of the power rankings after questioning the process. I remember people being removed from the playoffs after wondering how they would be repaid the lost revenue of a few "no-shows". The power rankings are so random, and then Joe finds justification in his bizarro world decision makings, and lashes out in all directions.

Does anyone remember Joe on the ABA site message board from 5 years ago?

Classic stuff.

Mr. Newman-
I saw on a web board that someone had asked how the ABA does their rankings of teams. Are you going to post how the ranks are determined on ABAlive.com? Is it a committe of people? If so, how many, and who is on it? I see teams making jumps up and back - how do they move around?
The NCAA has coaches polls, writers polls, and the computer progams that they use - what does the ABA use?
Thanks

Dan. Thanks for the email. Basically, the ABA has a panel of one - me - to determine the power rankings. I take into determination the won-lost record, the number of games, the closeness of losses, the difficulty of schedules, and how I feel on a given morning. Very scientific. Not hard to determine when a team is 12-0. Have a great weekend.

And my favorite (if only because I called his bluff and was greeted by his bon mots - gee, I miss those days...) :(

As you know college football has a rating system and formula for its ranking system. What is the American Basketball Associations rating system and
formula for the weekly rankings? Alex Clare, Iowa

Alex. Thanks for the email. How about sending me a copy of the college football rating system and let me see if it matches the one we use. You do have a copy, right? Thanks. Much appreciated.

A fairly straightforward question from an interested fan about the league rankings - the primary way teams are seeded for the post-season - is met with a typical smart*ss answer.

So, being the helpful sort that I am, I pitched in...

If you read it, you would see it was forwarded to the ABA discussion board by him. But seeing as how thorough you are with other, more important things (Al Howell, among others),I'm not surprised you missed it.

The new standards are working out great so far, aren't they? The league couldn't get past two weeks of the year without a team dropping out. Now, they are falling out all over the place. Good to know that the ABA once again has failed to provide a full, uninterrupted season of affordable, family-friendly entertainment.

But hey, at least the first hundred fans can get a free lapel pin. Heck, if those hundred fans went to an Xplosion, Frenzy or Wheels game, they would double the attendance.

Well, gotta love Joe. Don't actually answer the question, but be sure to rip the sender.

I suppose I'm not getting a holiday card from him this year.

The link for the BCS formula is below. Feel free to forward it to him. Maybe someone else will get an answer.

I love how he tells everyone else that they are "mean-spirited." That's one of his favorite phrases.

Hey Joe, I have one for you: HYPOCRITE...

If you go back even further, there was a message board at the Official ABA site.

I think it was the ABA2000 site, so it was during that time frame.

People asking Joe where their money was, etc. All the stuff we are still dealing with today.

Mercifully, took the message board down, as it had become as "biased" and "anti-ABA" as this site.

I do remember that mailing list, that was always good for Joe-isms.
Thanks for posting it.

no problem... happy to post some Newmanisms now and again.

I have most of the messages from March '05 on, when Joe became increasingly, comically bitter and cranky.

I especially recall the many times Joe and Tom would post on the board - demanding that they be removed from the list - since neither had the gray-matter ability to select the 'unsubscribe' function on their own - going so far as to threaten to contact Yahoo with a lawyer to force the issue.

Those were the days...

Let's check the history of the ABA - NO accountability WHAT-SO-EVER. It's about time the judicial system stepped in and called the ABA out for all that they are doing to not just minor league basketball, but to the United States as a whole.

Embarrassing!
