i was under the impression that the X-League was actually a highly competitive semi-pro league similar to the German Football League.
I thought that the companies who sponser the teams allow the players to work for them during the year while playing football for them.

neither the GFL nor the x-league are pro. GFL only pays certain players (usually their limited number of american stars) the rest are unpaid. In japan they are all unpaid for playing football, but will often be able to get jobs with the company they play for.
