We are still looking into it and trying to make it work for a real playoff to look forward to. Brad has done a good job in consolidating all teams into 8 divisions which will make the playoffs an easy look. This is whats proposed:

Top 4 teams in the division play for division champions. 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 and the winner of each play for the division championship. This creates "The Great Eight".

One havent decided yet but there will be one city elected to host "The Great Eight" and will play out to be a great weekend where the court will be the judge.

This isnt in stone yet but just the idea brings excitement to next season from my eyes. I cant wait for the division meetings next month and pray that we all come to an agreement and understanding of whats expected of us next season.

The first thing you need to do is make sure you finish the season in such a manner where the playoffs aren't just whose left and not totally disgusted with the whole thing.

The last three years, the playoff system has been simple. Any team that hasn't folded, suspended operations or flat out ran out of money made the playoffs. And even then teams would drop out in the middle of the playoffs.

You have to make sure you finish a season before even starting to worry about the post-season.

Cglue-- I'm glad that you seem more convinced that things will go better this year.
But....

Here's some free advice, from your Uncle Skippy.

Each division needs a president, commissioner, or Grand Poohbah.

This would be someone who could go around and make sure that everyone else doing what they were supposed to.

Each team would be required to pay for this individual to travel to their town, which wouldn't cost much...Hell, even send 'em on a greyhound, put em up in the econo-lodge, make them eat at the soup kitchen...My point being is that someone needs to be checking on the teams at many different junctures throughout the year.

Now to answer my own question about why this won't work, or will never happen.

My guess is that this would involve a Mr. Newman sharing his power with others, and actually having to make his decisions and reasons for granting franchises available for scrutiny to the other franchises. The side-deals and ignoring of qualifications that is OBVIOUSLY done to create franchises closer together would be exposed. He hasn't held onto power this long by creating an environment of open dialogue, why would he start now?

Just an idea I had at 3 am.

Well, Joe stated back in February that the 2007-08 'Great 8' would be held in Quebec City:

"Next year, we'll go back to last season's format and will do the Finals in Quebec City as part of the city's 400th birthday celebration. After that, we'll adopt the better of the two formats."

That's assuming, of course, that Quebec City still remains in the ABA and doesn't jump to the PBL or CBA or D-League. :)

It's not unusual for Crazy Joe to move the playoffs or All-Star game from one location to another during the season - depending of course n what happens with that team. The 2006 ASG, IIRC, was yanked from the Texas Tycoons and given to the Florida Pit Bulls, for example.

Quebec City has been scrapped as far as hosting the Great 8. Brad last stated that the ABA would host it in Indianapolis.

The ABA playoffs are like a sports version of "Survivor"!....yes there is all the drama and whining and back biting...but also you advance not by just bsketball winning but by being alive financially! LOL!

you better make sure that which ever city hosts the "Great 8" has enough money to pay for the entire thing. I mean hotel, travel, trophy, etc. because Joey boy will not put a dime in the pot. ask the people in Rochester, ask Gary Grant....

i actually think that the "Great 8" is one of the many few good ideas the ABA has come up with, but like Pistol44 said, Rochester ate up the cost for that 2 years ago, and not much money is made unless the home team is playing, where it should be played, idk yet

Dammit, James, you're encouraging Newman!

He probably thinks it'd be good TV that way.
