Mine would have to be Vipe-Bear, mascot for the defunct IHL's Detroit Vipers. Vipe was very interactive with the fans. I actually have an autographed 8x10 in my memorabilia collection. It must have been hot in the costume, though. Vipe definately had an "odor" about him. :-)
Second would be Sparky from the also defunct Motor City Mechanics. Many people played Sparky over 2 seasons, unfortunatly each was worse than the last. Sparky, version 1.0, actually did the "YMCA" with his legs while doing a handstand on top of a goal during an intermission. It was one of the most interesting things I have ever seen a mascot do. By the end he (actually a she on the inside) pretty much just walked around and never skated on the ice like the earlier version.
Neither would qualify, due to their "age" when they met their end.

Timber Jim, Portland Timbers.
He needs no costume, just a chainsaw and a dream. He is what a mascot should be, not a cartoon for the kids.
I wanted to hold out a little longer with this, in order to find some good articles and pictures that are out there... but time is having its way with me. Expect more later.
