I'm going to try to keep this updated each day, but here's where we're at.
Apparently there will be a two-team pool system that will comprise the postseason festival, with two games (one from each pool) played each day, giving the basketball fans in Enid three doubleheaders.

Oklahoma, currently 6th, can get as high as the 5th seed if it wins its last six games (it would tie Brooklyn, but because Brooklyn beat Oklahoma twice in the regular season the Kings would hold the tiebreaker).
Kansas, currently 5th, could get as high as the 4th seed if it wins its last five games.
Brooklyn would lock into the #4 seed if Kansas loses one of its final five games. It could slip to 5th if Kansas won all five of its last games.
Gary is locked into the #3 seed.
Albany, currently 2nd, could get as high as the 1st seed if it were to win its final game AND Dodge City were to lose two of its final four games.
Dodge City, currently 1st, would lock in the #1 seed with three wins OR two wins and an Albany loss.
Everybody follow? Of course this will change tomorrow and for the rest of the week.
I'm just hoping KS, OK and DC end up in the same pool so we can watch more matchups between those three.
On the serious side, thanks for updating the standings. That way I don't have to.

There is a very small possibility, depending on how Albany and Dodge City finish, that the "B" pool could have three teams from the original West conference (Dodge City, Gary, Oklahoma). For that to happen, Albany would have to move up to the #1 seed, while Dodge City would have to fall to the #2 seed - AND all other seeds must remain at their positions.

The Albany Pats web site doesn't include a game on the 25th, but the USBL web site does.
I assume Brooklyn isn't going to play any more games than necessary. I wonder if they are even going to make it to the tournament.

Oklahoma, currently 6th, has an EXTREMELY SMALL chance of getting the 5th seed if it wins its last four games AND Kansas loses all of its final four games.
Kansas, currently 5th, can finish no worse than 5th with a single win or Oklahoma loss; it could get as high as the 4th seed if it wins its last four games.

Rumor has it that Albany is not going to Enid for the tourney... is this true??
Chuck the Writer
06-22-2007, 07:47 PM
That might explain why Albany's "last" game against Oklahoma was replaced with another Dodge City-Storm matchup.
Somebody take the USBL out behind the barn and give it the Old Yeller treatment now.
... that at least two of Albany's top players --- Kareem Reid and Eric Williams --- want to join Gary, because some of Gary's players --- I believe Jamario Moon is one --- jumped ship.
Sorry, Gary, deal with it. If you have five on your roster, then play.
Albany's GM was named USBL executive of the year.
If that is true, it would the perfect end to a string of blunders made by the USBL front office.
Teams electing NOT to attend the tourney should not have personnel eligible for ANY awards at all. Nothing, not even second-team all-league, best waterboy, etc.
You quit the league, the league quits you.
Why not go out with at least a shred of dignity?

I gotta say... they should just bag the tourney and play the postseason festival using Statis Pro cards on a kitchen table. Because honestly, if this USBL season is representative of a typical USBL season, then it's no wonder why this league is in a mess.
Boy will I be glad when the CBA season starts up again.
I'm not sure why there is a need to hold the tourney, especially at this point.
Chuck...This season is NOT typical of a USBL season...it is the second one in a row and is worse than last year....That is why the solid teams in the USBL have said..."We are done!" with the USBL after this season. If the Legend, Cagerz and Storm aren't on the basketball landscape next year, it won't be because of the failure of the franchises...It will be because a crappy league brought them down.
What's the tiebreaker for the pool with Kansas and Gary playing each other twice? Margin of points?

Yes - whoever scores the most points in thw two games advances.
Thank goodness Kansas and Gary will play twice. They hardly played each other at all this season.

But WHO are you gonna take behind the woodshed? There is no one left in the league office is there? And do you really think the mercurial Messenheimers will be in Enid?

The Messupheimers won't be there. Not sure they've been to a tournament in several years.
They're too busy collecting their USBL "consulting" fees.
Not that it would matter or mean anything to most, but they could at least put out a big "this year sucked" press release.
I would hope they don't put out their yearly rehashed "congratulations and good luck to the teams ...blah, blah, blah" baloney.
I did see that the USBL scouting department recently jumped to the CBA to join Truax. Good for them. Those two guys have a genuine love what they do, much like Truax.

I guess I must dance to the beat of a different drummer because I don't directly equate problems with the league with a team's inability to put butts in seats. This from the above press release:
The Patroons cited financial losses as the primary reason for ceasing operations, which includes their final regular season game scheduled tonight against the Storm. The Dodge City Legend has agreed to play in place of Albany and the game will not be canceled.
The league could have been the Garden of Eden and this team still would have quit before the post-season tournament. They just didn't have enough money to operate in two leagues.
HAC,
There's a need to hold the tournament because it's Oklahoma's turn to host the tourney. Why stiff them? All the teams (including Albany) knew there would be a post-season tournament before the season started. Why should that change now? If the surviving USBL teams were doing well financially, then holding (or not holding) the tournament would not come into question. Like I said before, the league front office could have been problem free and these teams still would have struggled at the gate.

Oklahoma is already being stiffed.
I'm sure when Oklahoma signed on board it wasn't to host a five-team tournament at the end of a chaotic season.
So if the Oklahoma franchise said, "damn, we're going to lose (more) of our ass on this, let's call it quits now" then who could blame them?
The surviving teams are NOT doing well financially. Brooklyn just stopped playing games. When's the last time Gary played?
Kansas, Dodge and Oklahoma are the only franchises that simply kept playing games, even if it was against each other and very few were watching.
A problem-free USBL front office could have provided some guidance for the struggling teams, which is part of its job, hell, its main job.
However, it did nothing but put out bogus press releases such as, and I paraphrase, "we're working to help Delaware return for the 2008 season."

Gary played all the games it could play and didn't refuse to travel anywhere. Remember, the Steelheads had six home games in April (seven total in April) and thus had dead time toward the end of the season.
If a post-season tournament host (ANY post-season tournament host) packed it in because they were already losing money, then I would blame them if no one else does. They agreed to host the tournament before the season started and should have already made financial plans.

They agreed to host the USBL tournament that was going to be a real tournament, not a five-team, two-pod fiasco where one pod has two teams playing each other twice.
I'm sure Brooklyn would share no tears if the tourney was axed.
Oklahoma is not making money during the season and now they've been hit with this clunker of a tournament. And it's not like it's going to be a springboard to something better next season.
I'm not real big on watching other people throw good money after bad money. Oklahoma deserves better than this.
