Anyone seen the new FHL website? They've done major renovations to the site and updates. As it stands the league now consists of 6 teams in two divisions:
Western Conference
Calgary Cowboys
Edmonton Wolverines
Vancouver Seals
Eastern Conference
Montreal Muskateers
North Bay Express
Saint John Mariners
They show some "rule changes" of:
-a one referee system
-no red line
-icing from the far blue line
-no instigator penalty
-OT is five minutes of 3 on 3
There's a preliminary 2 week schedule posted on the website. Opening night will be October 16th, 2004 and will feature two games, Vancouver at Edmonton and Montreal at Saint John. North Bay kicks off the season on the 20th of October in Montreal. Calgary is the last team to play and starts on the 22nd of October in North Bay.
The kicker for anybody who might think that John Larsen might have his s--t together is shown under camps. The FHL is holding two try-out camps one in Edmonton July 14-16 and one in Toronto July 21-23. These camps cost $195 to attend, which is down from the almost $1000 Larsen charged in August of last year. Incidentally, no mention is made of those camps or any of the players signed at those camps. It appears if anybody who went to these camps and was signed really wants to play in the FHL, they will have to cough up another $195 to do so.
Also, there are no arenas listed on the website for any of the teams. I know Larsen had been in contact with the Stampede Corral in Calgary and an arena in Laval for the now scrapped 20-game spring season. I believe the Corral turned him down for a lease, but I could be wrong. It will be interesting to see if Larsen can get around to actually getting this league to play.
As an aside, he now has some competition as the QSPHL has become pro. From what I hear they pay wages that top about around ECHL money. This is just hearsay from what I've read but the money for this league comes from the Quebec Hell's Angels, who apparently own many of the teams. Regardless, now that this league is officially pro, meaning all players will be paid, Larsen will have a tougher time finding talent to play in his league. He would have been better off signing a few of the rejects from the CBC Making The Team (Dream, something like that?) try-out camp.
Also since the QSPHL has gone pro, when will OSC add them? This will not turn into another IIHL fiasco as the QSPHL has been around since 1995 or 1996 and has shown no signs of dying. I believe the league championship game was broadcast on RDS (French TSN) last season, although I could be wrong. The only draw back is there may be a lack of English coverage of the league. But, I'm assuming many people who view this website can understand French, so articles from Le Journal de Montreal or Le Soleil du Quebec could work just as well. But I do not advocate adding the FHL to OSC until the puck actually drops and even then, well who knows right?
