I'm surprised no one on these sites has noticed yet that the D-League is putting a franchise in Des Moines...

According to coach Nick Nurse's blog (http://blogs.dmregister.com/?cat=108) on Monday, names considered so far are:
Iowa Thundering Herd
Iowa Corncobs
Iowa Invasion
Iowa Scarecrows
Iowa Diesel
Iowa Energy
Iowa Steel Sharks
Iowa Skywalkers
Iowa Pride
Iowa Green Wave
They are looking for suggestions.

At least those names are unique and not all overused.

I can't say these wow me. It's a shame they don't know who their NBA team is. Perhaps, they could use a variation of that nickname. I was thinking Cornets, the old nickname of the WBL team.
I was also looking at Iowa's tourism site (www.traveliowa.com) and saw Oaks, which is their state tree or something and remembered the Iowa Oaks, Triple-A baseball team which was renamed the Cubs.
I guess Scarecrows is OK.

Da Bulls....
The Mid-western teams are pretty much set:
Sioux Falls and the T-Wolves
Fort Wayne and the Pacers
Youngstown and the Cav's
Toledo or Detroit and the Pistons
Iowa and Da Bulls
Milwaukee is the last team in the area without a known logical affiliate site.

"pretty much set"? I haven't seen anything but speculation about Youngstown, Toledo or Detroit. Where are you getting this?

My choice for the team name:
IOWA REAPERS
They can use the Grim Reaper for the mascot, but the name would be a tribute to Iowa's agricultural and farming heritage.
So without further ado, I choose the IOWA REAPERS.

Yes Reapers would be great. I suggested that long time ago when Dragons were born in old IBA.
I vote Reapers also with same ag related theme. Grim Reaper maybe standing in a corn field and/or riding a baler spitting out basketballs pulled by tractor instead of a stage coach pulled by horses.
Corn Stalkers could be another.

"Des Moines has an NBA Development League team. Now it just needs a name (sorry, “Bakersfield Jam” is already taken).
That’s where you come in.
KXNO radio station (1460 AM) is hosting a promotion to pick a name. Listen to “The Marty & Miller Show” 4-7 p.m. tonight, Thursday and Friday and call in to suggest names. The winning name will be announced June 29."

from coach Nick Nurse's blog (http://blogs.dmregister.com/?cat=108):
"The team name things is really heating up and here is where we are. On June 29th we are unveiling the name and logo along with team merchandise. Nationally known, sports writer, Bob Ryan will be in town to MC the event which will take place at IN-PLAY which is just 2 blocks from the Wells Fargo Arena.
My original thought was that this team should be the IOWA …. versus the Des Moines ….. Only because I think the whole Iowa thing makes it seem a little more high level (See Iowa Cubs and Iowa Stars vs. Des Moines Dragons and Des Moines Heat). However, a lot of people are encouraging us to us Des Moines.
What is it for you? Des Moines of Iowa? Send in your thoughts and nicknames. One winner will be sent to Vegas for 3 days hotel and flights."
