can missed f/gs be run back? if so, can't a f/g actually be used AS a kind of punt? or does the opposing team get the ball at the line of scrimmage of the missed f/g, no matter what? also, if f/gs can be run back, what if they go out the back of the end zone?

Yes they can.
The nets catch the ball and bounce them back on the playing surface. (They ain't there for decoration....)
Long field goals can be considered punts in the AFL.

Most, if not all, indoor/arena leagues will allow a missed FG attempt to be returned. The NFL also allows it.
