So that everyone can be on the same page, and have a better idea of why certain posters keep hacking at the ABA, I will start this thread and anyone please add to it, so people have a better idea of what an ABA team has or doesnt have.

90% of the teams DO NOT have player contracts, they paid them game by game
Most of the teams didnt surpass 40,000 in total payroll for the season
90% of the teams DO NOT have workers compensation
Most do not have a trainer
Most do not have an official scorers table
Most do not give players a 40 dollar per day per diem on the road
A MAJORITY used local players (YMCA etc) to fill in when they were short
16 teams used different high school gyms during the season
90% didnt have over 250 fans a game
A majority didnt have game programs ( NO, the one page xerox lineup doesnt count)
A majority didnt have the correct 3 point line
18 teams lost players during the seaon, i.e. quit, didnt show up.

Most didnt have 3 -d lights around the backboard

Most didnt have 3 -d lights around the backboard

Then how did they enforce the 3D rule?

If some teams didn't have the correct 3-point line, then, again, there's no consistency from game-to-game or team-to-team.

This discredits the league EVEN if they did keep legitimate stats every game. A "Three Point Percentage" or "Three Pointers Made" ABA leaders list would not have any credibility because not all players were shooting from the same distances, etc.

I really think that the ABA MUST implement a standard court size that all teams must play on. Sorry, Vermont. If you can't play on a regulation court and, hence, by the same rules as everyone else, you shouldn't be allowed to play in a professional sports league.

Could you please cite your source. :)

I do know he is right about the 3D lights for at least one team. Quebec City has something like red emergency lights on the floor in front of the scoring table that get lit up when the 3D rule is in effect. It may be because Laval University (Kebs home court) won't allow them to place lights on the backboard. Personally, I don't know if it's true or not.

Ok, so 1 thing is true.

I, for one, always relied on the PA announcer for telling the crowd when a 3D was in affect.

Please do not take any offense at this, but, being deaf, the only way for me to know the 3D rule is in effect, besides the refs hand signals, is to see the light on.

From my experience, most of this stuff is probably true, but they percentages might be a little exaggerated.

But $40 a day for per diem sounds a bit excessive anyways. Back in my college days, we got $20 a day for a full day on the road and $10 for a half day, and that was plenty.

Here's a thought though: Is per diem really necessary for a professional team, assuming they're getting paid fairly? I kind of thought the whole point of per diem was for a college athlete on scholarship to get his meals paid for when he doesn't have access to the comped meals at the college cafeteria.

NBA players get a $106 per diem. MLB players get $85.

Yes, per diem is neccessary and standard in the business word. Think about it. If you go on a business trip, your employer pays for your lodging, food, and transportation because you're acting on their behalf and any time away from home is a bit of an inconvenience, so companies want to make their employees comfortable on these trips. In addition, they know that eating out can be more expensive than eating at home. While the company still pays you your standard salary, it's expected that they'll pay all business-related travel expenses in addition.

Think about it. While it is the ABA, these teams are at least a portion of these guys' incomes. They are their employers.

Would you go on a business trip if your employer refused to pay for your food? I know I wouldn't.

sorry for having the lack of knowledge...

but what is 'per diem'

That's what ABA players say when they sign with another league!!!

<a joke.......sort of>

Its per day meal money while on road trips. "Per Diem" = per day in Latin I think.

Also, depending on the situation, a per diem can also be for other expenses. For example, MLB umpires get a $357 per diem, but they have to pay for their hotel room out of that money.

By the way, I believe that ABA players actually say "carpe diem" (seize the day) when they sign with another league.

(I am really sorry for that joke... it's even worse than James') :infun:

Per Diem in Puerto Rico (BSN) is 75 road games plus 6.00 toll money if it involves a trip on US-52 and the player is driving along that freeway.

35 Dollars home and 6.00 to get back for toll money on home games.

Note: I know that a good amount of the guys get off on the exits before the toll and then take the longer way home or do not live near the 3.00 and the 1.50 toll which adds up to 4.50 and the exit tolls in a few cities are at .50 cents and then theres the beginning and end junctions that are at .50 cents also so theres your six. still sick to give an additional six bucks.

Yet alone we pay our players every other Wednesday night so they can cash it on Thursday.

Minimum salary is 25k and that is for first year native rookies that are drafted in the league draft.

Rookie Free agents get 250 per game and teen players whom are NCAA eligible until they go to college for their freshman year are only allowed to get Meal Money at the home minimum which is 35 bucks. Now I can tell you this is crap all the owners give 75 bucks to them.

Have to note that many players in our league do have other jobs besides basketball its only the elite few that get to play basketball as a living and we all know thats for a very short span.

NBA players get a $106 per diem. MLB players get $85.

MLB players get some of that deducted (last I heard around $25) for the post-game spread. I don't think the NBA does that.

Forget all this per diem ****, if you don't have an official scorers table then this is totally BS.

Can someone clear this up please?

This doesn't take inside knowledge, if there isn't a table with people, like 8 of them, keeping stats and counting points and fouls, then this is a pick-up league.
