Is the IBL able to avoid paying players insurance because they mandate that players have a second job? What if the league increased salaries? Would they have to pay insurance then?

I agree. Though with the salaries these guys are pulling in, its likely they do have second jobs. But I don't believe the league rules require it. Especially considering that unless the league or teams provide the jobs, it may be difficult to find work in some of the smaller places the teams play.

I've heard many people say it on these boards. The point is the league teams don't pay insurance on their players and they require players to be covered. Is the fact that most jobs have some sort of insurance the reason the teams don't have to cover players? I'm not bashing the league. In fact I like the league. I just don't understand how that works.

I don't recall "mandatory," but I seem to remember "highly recommended" and maybe "you're really stupid if you don't."

the biggest problem- well, besides the lack of talanted players and that thet play in high school gyms, is that if a guy blows out a knee while playing- there is not team insurance to pick up the tab on the medical bills. It is a joke. the IBL expects the players full-time job to pick up the tab. What if the player does not work. "well, we have a waiver" which was quoted to me. That is not worth spit. It does not matter how fancy your web site is, or how many press releases you put out- the IBL is still a second rate league. If you understand that going in- great, have fun. But don't make it out to be bigger or more professional that what it really is.

See expanding into Canada will help alleviate these problems for the Canadian clubs. Providing they sign players who have Canadian citizenship, they would be able to use the government funded health care system in Canada and as a result this wouldn't be a major problem. The only way they would have to pay for a player's medical care is if they are playing in the US and a major injury requiring immediate medical attention occurs.

Without ever seeing a game I have no way of refuting the claims that it is a second rate league. I have been told to expect a level above the old WBL/NBL level, however I doubt this will be true as those leagues were about the level of the CBA.

Hey someday in the U.S. we will have universal healthcare also and that will be a big help to all minor sports leagues because they won't have to pay the direct cost of insurance or care.

Its still illegal and immoral for their teams not to have worker's comp insurance. One IBL team website claims all the players are "volunteers" and they are not-for-profit so thus they aren't required to provide worker's comp. I would imagine many of the franchises don't have it.

But that is merely an avoidance scam because if you look at their roster - they are all pro players who play in other pro leagues and so its obvious they are just paying them cash under the table.
