Alexandria, LA - The Alexandria Aces of United League Baseball (ULB) announced today they have signed infielders Luis Guance, Josh Tranum, Richard Paz, pitchers Jason Moody, Buddy Bengel and Adam Cox to their 2007 roster.
Guance, who enters his 8th season in professional baseball returns to the Aces in 2007. Guance was originally signed as non-drafted free agent by the Colorado Rockies in October of 1999. He spent six seasons in the Rockies organization making it to the Tulsa Drillers, the Rockies Class AA Affiliate. A lifetime .249 hitter, last season with the Aces, Guance hit .297 with 11 home runs, while driving in 67 runs. His 11 home runs led the team in that category.
A native of Los Teques, Venezuela, Paz returns to the Aces for his 14th professional season. Before joining the Aces last year, Paz was a member of the Prink BBC Grosseto in Italy. Paz spent five seasons at the AA and AAA levels with four different major-league organizations. In 460 games at the top two levels of minor-league baseball, Paz hit .296 with a sterling .393 on-base percentage. His last season in affiliated baseball was 2004, which he split between AAA Charlotte and AA Birmingham in the Chicago White Sox organization.
Tranum, a five-year pro from Collierville, Tennessee, originally signed with the Dubois County Dragons of the Frontier League in 2002. He spent one season with the Dragons before signing with the San Diego Padres, where he played for the Ft. Wayne Wizards, the Padres' Class A Affiliate. A lifetime .285 hitter, Tranum spent three seasons with the Jackson Senators of the Central Baseball League prior to joining the Aces last season. Over his career, Tranum has blasted 53 home runs while collecting 346 RBI. Tranum was named the Senators' MVP following the 2004 campaign.
Bengel, a Quinnipiac University product, will once again be a part of the Aces pitching staff. After joining the Aces midway through last season, Bengel appeared in 19 games recording a 5-8 record to go along with a 6.08 ERA. This season will mark Bengel’s fourth year in professional baseball having spent time in New Haven County in 2004 and Elmira in 2005, both in the Canadian-American Association. For his career, Bengel is 8-13 with a 5.22 ERA.
A six-foot-four lefthander from Thomasville, Georgia, Cox was a fourth-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2000 out of Darton Junior College. He has pitched in parts of five professional seasons, including a 4-2 mark with a 5.10 ERA with the Aces in 2006. Batters hit just .227 against Cox last year, and he recorded 43 strikeouts in 47.2 innings pitched.
Jason joins the field staff as pitching coach and will also pull double-duty as a left-handed reliever for the Aces this season. Originally a 23rd round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1998, Jason enters his eighth season as a player and first as pitching coach. Prior to last season, he had previously played for the Aces in 2002 and has also pitched against the Aces as a member of the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (2002) and Shreveport Sports (2003). A Charlotte, North Carolina resident, Jason attended Spartanburg Methodist Junior College in South Carolina before signing with the Dodgers.
United League Baseball is an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas and Louisiana. The United League is preparing for its second season this summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Harlingen, and San Angelo, Texas; and Alexandria, Louisiana. The ULB will play a 100-game schedule between May and August 2007. Opening Day for all of United League Baseball is May 8, 2007.
