Gladiators’ coach, owners part ways

04/16/07
From staff reports

Cabral Huff is no longer the head coach of the Rome Gladiators and the Rome Knights — that much, at least, is for sure.

The details of his exit, however, are a matter of dispute.

Huff and Elena Brown, the co-owner of the Gladiators and Knights, gave conflicting accounts of the situation when the two were reached by phone Monday night.

Huff said he and his entire coaching staff resigned their positions late last week. But Brown said that Huff and his staff were let go.

Huff said on the phone that he and his staff “never got any answers to the questions we had begun asking regarding some things that were taking place in the organization.”

In an e-mail sent out Monday morning, Huff wrote that he and his staff, which was working on a volunteer basis, had resigned “due to the lack of professionalism, and honesty of ownership.”

Brown on Monday night said that Huff and his staff were let go because they “were not getting us where we needed to go.”

Brown said the Gladiators/Knights named Gerald Oliver as the teams’ new coach Thursday morning. Oliver was a former assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Gladiators, the two-time champs of the WBA, are scheduled to open the season in May. The season has been pushed back because of some illness in the league’s front office.

The Knights are members of the ABA, and are scheduled to play their first season in Rome this winter.

On a personal note:
After buying season tickets for the last two season, I have to say that there is 0 chance of me buying them again. And I'm pretty close to throwing in the towel all together.

Not getting them where they "needed to go?" They were two-time champs of the league! Where did he want them to go?

Wonder what the bottom line is financially? Otherwise I'd say "difference of opinions on the team's future."

I think it's a mistake to associate with the ABA as well as the WBA, just my opinion.

i personally went to a couple of gladiator practices and am surprised ownership took this long to change coaches. it was very obvious that this man had no clue as to leading a championship team. i know of the new coach and i cant wait to see them take the court and bring rome aother championship.

I have done a little investigating and why have the owners changed from when the team was first announced under new ownership as two have been replaced by two other ones. Plus I have heard this ownership group has another team in Chattooga in the WBA. Is this true? Plus I have heard there will be no ABA for the Rome team which may have been the reason for departure of the coaching staff and etc. JackB how did you get in practice as I tried and wasn't allowed. Are they still practicing at the Boys and Girls Club because I was turned away one day by the lady who said she was the owner. Regardless where is the charity game they are to be playing? I would like to see them to determine if it's worth my money for season tickets.

Rome Gladiators and Knights owner, Elena/Yelena Brown arrested on forgery charges among others in Rome. I have just heard of this as it is slowly leaking to all in Rome. Hopefully, we will learn more in Rome Tribune and other outlets.

Just saw this on www.wbaball.net

BCAS Classic
Regretfully, we will be postponing the annual Black College All Star Classic to a later date. Unforeseen circumstances prevent us from upholding the confirmed date, yet the World Basketball Association Foundation Family remains excited by the possibilities of what is to come in 2008. Please stay close as we will keep current information posted and updates on new arrangements for this community event. We thank you all for your support!

Respectfully,
Leroy McMath, WBA President

How NIFL of them. Are they sure no one named Patterson or Wiener or some other alias was involved.

Someone call Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. This could be the sequal of "Catch Me if You Can."

At this point we can't be sure what aliases are involved. There hasn't been any news since the arrest report.

I'd like to see more information, but I doubt we ever will.
