Just a couple of minor points here. As far as interns go, any business who doesn't utilize them just isn't thinking. An internship not only provides free labor, but it gives students valuable job experience for their chosen field. If the intern is strong, there is the possibility of a full-time job after college which saves money in the recruiting process. Interns are not a bad thing, in fact, they are good things.

Personally, I think tryout camps should be free of charge, but that is just my opinion. Why make guys pay to try out? I do see the point that it will weed those out who don't have a prayer, but to me, charging a fee is not good PR.

Ever run one?

Ever heard of insurance?

You could have guys sign waivers, but good luck with that. You probably have to rent a venue and carry your own insurance in case someone gets hurt during the tryout.

Whether it's good PR or not, it does keep complete hacks who could potentially not only gum up the works but realistically hurt someone from coming down and trying out.

Now, I'm not saying that's why the ABA does it. The ABA does it to make a buck. I'm sure they don't worry about stuff like insurance and doing things the right way.

The D-League had a no-fee tryout and over 200 people showed up for the first Asheville tryout. Even with three side-by-side courts it was absolute chaos. More than half of them didn't look qualified to tryout out for an intramural team, let alone tryout out for a serious team.

They put in a $125 tryout fee the next year I thought and about 70 showed. About right.
