Papo Davila was hired by Laredo Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez in January to take the reigns of the Broncos in 2007. Davila has been hard at work from his home in Columbia, Missouri to bring the best possible players to Laredo. In his three months on the job, Davila has signed some very good ball players and has improved the total make up of the team.
Davila mentioned that “With the recent moves in the team, I hope to have a competitive and respectable team, defensively and offensively. I put together a bullpen of veterans and young pitchers with experience in the league. My position players are versatile and most of them are utility players. Making it more interesting and diverse for the Laredo Broncos.”
General Manager Jose Melendez has praised the hard work of Papo. “We are so ahead of last year in assembling this team. I am very confident that we will have a tremendous team this season. There never goes a day where Papo and I don’t talk about how we can improve the ball club. That just shows how much we care about being competitive.” Melendez added.
When Melendez and ULB President Craig Brasfield were searching for the right manager in Laredo, they wanted someone that was very community oriented and also can adapt to the dynamic Hispanic city of Laredo. Enter Papo Davila, Puerto Rican born and a Mexican League Baseball Veteran. Davila was very instrumental in starting up the Roberto Clemente RBI program in Puerto Rico in which Melendez will like to someday start a similar program in Laredo.
Davila goal is to become very community oriented and help out the kids in the Laredo area since that is his passion. He loves talking to kids and helping out anyway he can. He has already made initiations with Melendez on visiting the Boys and Girls club in Laredo and inviting all of them to a game as well as offer free clinics to the Laredo Youth.
Davila has also boasted about his great signings that he has done. He has traded for 2006 ULB pitcher of the year, Santos Hernandez and former Major League Veteran Angel Miranda. But the player that everyone should look after according to Davila is former 1st round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals, Juan Lebron. Lebron born and lives in Puerto Rico was often and is still compared to former AL MVP Juan Gonzalez.
He is a big power threat and powerful specimen standing at 6”6” and weighing 240. Davila mentioned that he is trying to bring not only baseball players but also quality people to the community. “I would like to bring positive energy and a positive influence to the youth and the parents. Also the Hispanic community in Laredo can identify with the Broncos players as a 70 percent of the team is Hispanic.” Davila Stressed.
With spring training less than 4 weeks away, the future looks bright for the Laredo Broncos. Only time will tell where the Broncos will be in late August. Hopefully in the championship round of the ULB playoffs.
The Laredo Broncos play a 100 game season at Veterans Field this season. For season tickets, group outings or sponsorship information, please contact our office at 956-723-2273 or jose@laredobroncos.com.
