An altercation with police and security at an Alexandria nightclub has resulted in the United League suspending Alexandria Aces manager Ricky VanAsselberg.

League President Craig Brasfield announced the suspension Monday afternoon, a day after VanAsselberg was shot with a Taser stun gun and arrested on two misdemeanor charges following an altercation with police at GG's Club.

Brasfield, a former Aces general manger, said VanAsselberg's future with the team will be determined after an investigation into the incident. The United League owns the Aces.

"United League Baseball would like to apologize to the citizens of Alexandria for the actions that took place early Sunday morning," Brasfield said in a statement released by the Aces. "We are looking into this matter further and will make the decision that is best for United League Baseball, the Aces, and for Ricky, once we have the details of the investigation."
Brasfield also said VanAsselberg had been fined an undisclosed amount.

VanAsselberg did not return a message left on his cell phone seeking comment Monday.

VanAsselberg was arrested at 12:56 a.m. at GG's Club on Coliseum Boulevard. He was charged with one count of simple battery and resisting an officer. Former Louisiana College softball player Kayla Hemperley of Winnfield also was arrested. She was charged with battery on a police officer, interfering with an officer, resisting arrest and resisting arrest by silence.

According to a police report, VanAsselberg was one of a group of people asked by GG's security to leave the club. VanAsselberg refused to leave and then got into a dispute with Dan Ouber of GG's security detail, the report said.

"I then walked up to suspect VanAsselberg and told him several times to leave the property," Alexandria Police Cpl. Kenneth Rachel wrote in his arrest report. "It appeared that he was going to leave then he took a swing at security (Dan Ouber) with his right fist and hit Ouber in the right side of his face. Ouber and VanAsselberg then fell to the ground and began fighting."

Rachel said in the report that he told VanAsselberg several times to stop fighting or "I would use the Taser on him."

"VanAsselberg continued to fight," Rachel wrote in his report. "I then drew and discharged one round into suspect VanAsselberg's back."

Hemperley, who was a senior at LC this past year, then became involved in the incident, Rachel said in his report, writing that Hemperley knocked the Taser gun from his hand.

"While trying to retrieve the Taser, Hemperley struck me in the left side of the face with her hand," Rachel wrote in his report.

VanAsselberg was taken to Huey P. Long Medical Center in Pineville, where he was treated and released, police said.

Both VanAsselberg, 32, and Hemperley, 22, were taken to the Rapides Parish Jail, where they were booked and later released on bonds. VanAsselberg posted bonds totaling $1,000, while Hemperley posted bonds totaling $2,000.

VanAsselberg, a former Aces player, was named the United League's Manager of the Year this past summer while leading the Aces to the league's inaugural championship. He also guided the Brownsville (Texas) Toros to the title in February in the league's inaugural winter league.

Hemperley batted .294 this past spring for a Louisiana College team that finished with a 38-9 record and reached the NCAA Regional. She appeared in 42 games, starting 41.
