RP-SAN MIGUEL WHIPS ABA?S HOLLYWOOD FAME IN 1ST TUNEUP GAME
Helterbrand, Hontiveros, Pennisi strike hard vs Bryon Russell-led squad
Wednesday, 04 April 2007
CARSON CITY, CA ? The RP-San Miguel team rallied from 18 points down against the Bryon Russell-led ABA Hollywood Fame en route to winning its first tuneup game, 98-81, Monday noon at the Home Depot Center.

The Nationals missed their first four shots and quickly trailed by double digits as Jimmy Johnson, 6-5 Billy Knight, 6-6 Mo Spillers, 6-9 Ron Mingo and the 6-7 Russell, a former Lakers player, dominated inside and surprised the visitors with their deft outside shooting.

The Fame further hammered the Filipinos with 6-9 John Nortridge combining with Jamaal Kendricks in opening an 18-point lead early in the second quarter.

RP coach Chot Reyes quickly pulled his team together as Asi Taulava, Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Renren Ritualo and Jayjay Helterbrand started connecting.

Ritualo and Pennisi then engineered a scorching rally that wiped out the deficit as the Fame went into the locker room holding a 51-50 edge.

The second half was RP-San Miguel all the way, with Pennisi and Dondon Hontiveros delivering long-distance bombs and Helterbrand shredding the Fame defense in setting up Tony de la Cruz from the perimeter.

The Americans trailed by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter and went into a full court press which the Nationals easily broke down with superb ball-handling.

A rematch is set Tuesday with Russell, best remembered as the Utah Jazz defender faked out of position by Michael Jordan, then still with the Chicago Bulls, for that picture-perfect winning jumper, vowing revenge, as the Filipinos? superior ballhandling rendered their fullcourt press useless.

"More impressive than our shooting, conditioning, and quickness was the fact that we did not give up even when we were down by 18 early," said Reyes. "We struggled early, but the players found a way to overcome the soreness and fatigue they felt from the morning's workouts"

Reyes added the Nationals "communicated very effectively, and their genuine concern for each other was inspiring. Overall, I am quite satisfied with this, our first game ever as a unit."

if I'm wrong, but HDC is a soccer complex. What did they, convert it into a Basketball facility just for this game?

If the story is correct, I assume that they played at the adjacent gym on the Cal State Dominguez Hills campus.

of course the story is true....check out www.pba.ph....PBA - Philippine Basketball Association - the oldest and the first pro basketball league play-for-pay in ASIA...we have our own pro league even before China, Japan and other powerhouse teams in Asia.......

I guess it doesnt matter if its now a soccer complex or a hockey rink bro, what matters to me is they beat a Byron Russell led team, ex-NBA pro and the Philippine National team beat them in their homecourt...I just dont understand this site is not updated with games result or was it just an exhibition game so no one really cares to post it here??? oh well, the bottom line anyway is my Team Filipinas won...In any sport, a win is a win...

To be correct, the Home Depot Center is not the Hollywood Fame's home court. They play in Santa Monica.

The Home Depot Center does not have a basketball arena. I'm pretty sure that if they mean the Home Depot Center, they probably actually played at Cal State Dominguez Hills (the Home Depot Center is on their campus).

I know that Home Depot Center is the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy, of the MLS. It is not a Basketball home. HDC is part of the that University of Calif, at Santa Dominguez. It is not hockey, it is soccer, Zoomair. If your game was played there, it was a temporary setting, or perhaps you confused it with something else. But HDC is a soccer complex. I know, because I cover soccer. I'm happy that your team won, but I doubt the facility that it was played at is a permanent home for you or your opponent.

The HDC has a large soccer stadium, a large tennis stadium, a track stadium that is used by the LA Riptide (Major League Lacrosse), and velodrome (indoor cycling). There is no basketball arena.

No, the Riptide play in the track stadium. I went to a few games last summer. It's a shame that they don't play in the soccer stadium. Most of their home games were in the afternoon and there's absolutely no shade anywhere in the track stadium, and all they have are metal bleachers that just reflect all the sun right back up at you. My wife fainted at one game from heat stroke. I really wish they'd move to the soccer stadium. I realize it's probably too large, but they have nice canopies that hang over the seating bowl.

It was my understanding that the Riptide MOSTLY don't play in the main stadium. Heck, the Galaxy play some US Open Cup games in the alternate stadium... though possibly not this year.

I'd think, IF this happened, they mean the CS Dominguez Hills gym, not the Home Depot Complex.

Last year the Riptide didn't play any games in the soccer stadium. They were all at the track stadium. The league championship game, hosted by LA, was also in the track stadium.

I believe the Riptide also plan on using the track stadium as their home field this year.

Fatigue finally catches up with Nationals
Thursday, 05 April 2007

CARSON CITY, CA ? The Hollywood Fame exacted the revenge that Bryon Russell promised, calling in key reinforcements to pummel RP-San Miguel, 100 - 76, at the Home Depot Center Tuesday.

Showing up with a pair of super guards, the Fame capitalized on the poor shooting and creeping fatigue of the Nationals, as they evened their series at 1-1.

Russell, the NBA veteran who last played for the Los Angeles Lakers, has vowed to get back at the Nationals after dropping the opener of their exhibition series, 98-81.

RP-San Mig opened well with Danny Seigle catching fire early. But the Fame came back hard, ending the first quarter with a 28-16 lead.

Numb from their 8 a.m. weights session and 9 a.m. court training, the Nationals failed to produce the comeback run they successfully engineered just 24 hours earlier, sputtering against the hard-charging Americans in trailing 36-54 at the half.

Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Seigle sparked a minor rally at the start of the second half, but the Fame had an answer this time courtesy of Lamar Gayle and Mo Spillers, who countered with a 10-2 run for a 76-55 advantage going to the final period.

Team Pilipinas mounted a last-ditch effort to turn the game around midway in the fourth, but again the Fame struck with guards Dino Tanner and Kevin Bradley draining clutch 3-pointers to smother the rally.

"Back-to-back three-a-days finally took its toll on the players as they had very little to give today," said RP coach Chot Reyes. "Still, this game was meant to make our players learn how to play under very difficult circumstances. It is important that we learn how to execute and play at a high level even under fatigue, as we will certainly find ourselves in this situation in the future."

Gayle of Cal-State Bakersfield had 21 points, while Tanner added 17. Russell had nine points.

Mark Caguioa made nine of his 15 points in the third quarter and Renren Ritualo all of his eight in the fourth.

The Scores:

HOLLYWOOD FAME 100 - Gayle 21, Tanner 17, Bradley 15, Spillers 14, Russell 9, Banks 9, Aftalion 5, Whyte 4, Williams 4, Anderson 2.

RP-SAN MIGUEL 76 - Caguioa 15, Seigle 11, Taulava 10, Ritualo 8, De la Cruz 6, Pennisi 6, Helterbrand 4, Alapag 4, Hontiveros 4, De Ocampo 4, Raymundo 4.

....so its not 30+ lead afterall as per whoever posted in another thread......and also the fame added some reinforcement cos they know they needed quality players to beat my team ...thats lame...now i know why someone would say the fame are lame....they didn't fight with the same guys who played in previous game....

God, you know absolutely nothing about anything.

The "Home Depot Center" is a freaking complex that includes the 27,000 (actually less, they're fibbing) seat soccer stadium, a tennis stadium, a track and field stadium, an indoor events center and a boatload of practice fields. It is not simply the soccer stadium.

It was developed and is operated by AEG, the Anschutz Entertainment Group. If you were going to play a basketball game in the soccer stadium (though I don't know why you would, seeing as how there's a freaking indoor events center on the grounds), you'd need to go through AEG, not the Galaxy (though AEG owns the Galaxy). If it's in MLS' offseason, the Galaxy doesn't have eff-all to say about it, and when it IS MLS' season, AEG is more than happy to bump the Galaxy (and Chivas USA, the other soccer team) out for the X-Games or other money-making opportunities.

You "cover soccer?" You "work in soccer?" Give me a ******* break. You don't cover anything. You don't "work" in soccer. Your grasp on the facts is so completely tenuous as to be laughable. It's Cal State Dominguez Hills where the HDC is located, not Santa Dominguez.

Are you able to see this photograph?

http://www.impactbball.com/images/fac_b_13.jpg

That's a basketball court.

In the middle of a velodrome.

Under a banner that clearly says "ADT Event Center."

Which is....wait for it...one of the sporting facilities at the Home Depot Center complex on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, California.

Whether it's permanent or not, it exists and (apparently) games were played on it. So, yes, it was played at the HDC. The HDC is a lot more than just the soccer stadium. It's a 125-acre development that encompasses several sporting facilities.

THe Fame did not call on reiforcements to beat the Filipino team... Coach Hernando was giving more guys from the LA area an opportunity to play in front of Filipino coaches in hopes that they may have an opportunity to play there one day. THe Philippines are always looking for imports who will make their teams better...

THis was not about who beat who but its about making the Philipino team better... Coach hernando is half Filipino so I know that means alot to him

zoomair23
04-05-2007, 12:28 PM
It was a good practice/exhibition game for my team ...for both teams i guess.....I just dont believe the idea that coach Hernando would let his other players to play and to give some exposure for Filipino coaches to see other US players...im not buying that...they wanted to win as well thats why they took other good players (from other teams?)

This is the basketball nat'l team of the Philippines and the main reason why the govt spend their money to send these players in the US is to play better youre right on that one ..AND to be prepared for the qualifying games for the Olympics 2008...and that does not include finding quality imports that can play in the Philippines thats for sure.....We do have teams though and agents from the Philippines who come and see US players to play as import back home but not this time...Not this particular trip....The main objective this time is to have the national team become prepared for bigger challenges in Int'l games next year and hopefully they make it all the way to the Olympics again after very long years...Back in the '50s the Philippines won the bronze medal...first in Asia to win a medal in basketball in world champisonship...not too sure if it's still the only Asian country until now who won at least bronze in Basketball World Championship or FIBA ...(fiba.com)

I remember reading about what the activities would be. But soccer is the only thing I watch that I know is being covered there(Galaxy and Chivas). They also have Lacrosse if I remember right. So any Basketball would be only a temperary thing, and not a home. My question would be, why make a temporary Basketball court there when there must be other locations in that area that they can play in?

Everyone is entitled to an asnwer to their question, I think I am also. LAsports fan said there are no courts in that facility, which means this was a temperary one. Caguioa shines in impressive win
Saturday, 07 April 2007
CARSON CITY, CA ? Fresh from a 24-hour respite, RP-San Miguel came back with a vengeance, crushing Cal State-Dominguez Hills, an NCAA Division-II school, 90-71, at the Home Depot Training Center Friday.

A different starting lineup comprised of Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Tony de la Cruz, Ranidel de Ocampo and Asi Taulava set the tone for the match, opening a 7-0 lead that appeared to surprise the Dominguez Hills Toros.

Caguioa finished with 22 points while Danny Seigle came off the bench with 14.

Behind their leader Jamel Barnes, the Toros closed the gap halfway through the period. But the Nationals? second unit ? Jimmy Alapag, Dondon Hontiveros, Kerby Raymundo, Mick Pennisi and Seigle ? restored the advantage and set Team RP on the road to a 31-16 first quarter breakaway.

The Toros tried to rattle the Filipinos with a 1-3-1 defense, but Renren Ritualo, Hontiveros and Pennisi brought Cal-State right out of the zone with long-range bombs from beyond the arc.

The lead was 48-28 at the half, a bulge RP-San Miguel maintained at the end of three quarters, 70-50.

?Unlike the first two games when our mentality was just to compete and execute, we went into this game with the mindset that we were out to win,? said RP coach Chot Reyes.

?We practiced only until 12 noon yesterday, and got everyone back at 12 noon today, thus giving everyone a 24-hour break, and it showed in the energy. More than the win, what pleased me was our ball movement and the players' selflessness.?

The RP-San Miguel squad returns to the gym for its three-a-day practice Saturday.

?We?ll see how well we play with fatigue next game,? Reyes said.

The scores:

RP-SAN MIGUEL 90 ? Caguioa 22, Seigle 16, De la Cruz 14, Pennisi 9, Raymundo 8, Taulava 6, Hontiveros 4, Ritualo 3, Alapag 3, De Ocampo 3, Helterbrand 2.

CAL STATE-DOMINGUEZ 71 ? Ward 16, Walton 14, Steed 10, Nibo 9, Barnes 6, Love 4, Isaac 4, Fowler 2, Ramey 2, Duhon 2, Johnson 0.
