In attempt to stimulate a serious discussion about the future of the ABA ...

What, if anything does the ABA have to offer minor league basketball in America?

And if there is something to offer ... Are there any qualified and exceptional individuals out there who could transform this league into something special?

How long would it take to transform the ABA, if the right person or group of persons were selected for the job?

What needs to be done at the executive level?

The ABA could be a relatively stable league of 25-30 teams that has modest travel which actually lends to teams making money. That is what it could be, and that's what would set it apart from the other two minor leagues. However, the instability leads to teams scrambling to fill dates, which ultimately makes maintaining credibility difficult which starts the domino effect. With the right leadership, I really believe the concept could work. But it really comes down to not letting anyone in the league. There's a decent core in this league, but they're all dragged down by the weak links.

I have to fall back on my earlier thoughts, going regional as a tournament league with a large corporate sponsor encompassing 8 to 10 teams playing up to a final 2 that battle for the regional trophy, those 2 or even the top three teams earn the right to play nationally in a much larger league with a much larger sponsor. Plenty of details to work out but it would keep the league inexpensive to play in and inexpensive to the fans, and give the best organizations a chance for exposure for themselves and their players.
