Possibly by this week a press conference will be made notifying that 6 teams will be leaving the ABA immediatle. The teams are Maryland, Long Island, Quebec,
Rochester, Buffalo and Jacksonville. Each team will inturn file a law suit aganist Joe Newman for deceptive practices and other counts. The teams are planning to join another league, as to which league, no information was available at this time.

Ya know, I usually will call Alex Wolff and have him confirm or deny some of the rumors that fly around. This one is just too funny for words!! I think I will shoot him an e-mail with the title "Here is a really good one for you!!!" Somehow I think Alex could use a laugh early on in the morning. This is GREAT fiction!!!!

How about this one...

This actually came from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, as written by columnist Bob Matthews, and I quote:

The Halifax Rainmen are expected to join the ABA in November. Management distributed Rainmen T-shirts and unveiled their mascot Thunder and cheerleading Weather Girls, but they've yet to name a coach, sign any players or announce a home court. ABA co-founder and chairman Joe Newman told a Halifax newspaper that the league will subsidize travel costs to bring top teams to Nova Scotia. Only Santa Claus makes more promises than Newman and Santa usually delivers more presents.

So let me get this straight... Newman's going to front the cost to bring top teams to Halifax, but he couldn't front the cost to pay for all the players to get to the All-Star Game? And okay, like how come Halifax earns subsidized travel, when none of the other teams in the Great White North get this bonus, eh? Sounds like Unca Joe's talking out of both sides of his touque again.

In other words, who need made-up stuff like teams jumping to other leagues when you can have Unca Joe giving out, as Mary Poppins once said, "pie-crust promises - easily made and easily broken." Guess it's just all in a day for the Magpie.

Yeah, Halifax earning subsidized travel is a good one. Somehow I don't think the Vermont's and Rochester's of the league will appreciate that!! As far as the All-Star game, does that surprise you in the slightest? Joe? Do something stupid like that? Come on!! Joe Newmann is the most ethical guy in the world!!

Actually, IMO, the more interesting part of the Matthews column is this:

"The defending champion Rochester RazorSharks chose not to send coach Rod Baker and player James "Mook" Reaves to last weekend's American Basketball Association All-Star Game in Halifax, Nova Scotia"

I find it curious that they decided not to send them. Obviously it's not because they can't afford to do it.

I just remember that when St. John's NF joined the American Hockey League back in what I think was the late 1980's early 1990's, the team actually had to subsidize the travel costs for all franchises in the league at that time. That included Rochester, Hershey, Springfield, Adirondack (Glens Falls NY), etc. As several franchises disappeared or came under new management (i.e., the Springfield Indians were replaced by the Springfield Falcons; the New Haven Nighthawks and Adirondack Red Wings went bye bye), the subsidy payments by St. John's decreased.

But that was a requirement for that team to pay the subsidy, not for the AHL to pay the subsidy for it. So unless somebody put some mescaline in Unca Joe's Metamucil this morning, Unca Joe's up to his old tricks again.

A1Sports Welcome!!

Funny how "Sportsgig" is listing as having joined today but yet sounds identical to A1 and has all this supposed knowledge of inside events!!

1) Why would Maryland leave the ABA now when Tom Doyle is the President and, at the worst, is attempting to oust Newman and run the ABA???
2) Why would Rochester leave now when the remainder of their home games would be in jeopardy??
3) Why would Quebec leave with Montreal under new ownership, Halifax and Toronto coming in??

It couldn't be the spring leagues and it can't be the CBA or the NBDL...so what other league is there??

Leaving mid-season is unlikely. If a bunch of teams wanted to leave and create their own league, then I could see it happening. In theory, those teams could leave now and fill all their dates with each other. Again, it seems unlikely.

Still, I'm surprised that Rochester would "choose" not to send players. Maybe it's as simple as them not having faith they'd be reimbursed. But, the Razorsharks bought their own championships rings, so it's not like them to bail due to costs. And, they've been open publicly about the ABA's issues but displayed a lot of patience.

For the rest of the Razorsharks season, I'm sure they're less than thrilled that Hollywood may not visit now, Toledo is on the schedule and they burned them due to poor communication for a road game, and the new Brooklyn team remains on the schedule (we'll see what happens with them). So, I wouldn't be surprised if Rochester ends up seeing a lot of teams like Strong Island, Maryland, and Buffalo--although likely as ABA members.

Moving forward, I wonder if a few teams could create a MILL/NLL scenario. The Rochester owner (a different guy) lead a movement where everyone left the MILL for the NLL during an off season. If a few of the stronger owners aren't happy, you never know. But, again, don't hold your breath.

...as Mary Poppins once said, "pie-crust promises - easily made and easily broken." Guess it's just all in a day for the Magpie.

Oh. I haven't heard that line in years! :D

I know that there is a local investigation on going. If they find anything, I'll let you know.

You know, sockpuppetry is a bannable offense on most any board. Paul, why can't it be the same here?

a1sports and sportsgig both sound an awful lot like IndyQuickDraw from the old Almost Basketball Association board - must've gotten tired of debating with himself over there.

In addition to this post about Buffalo, i have spoken to officials at three other teams and they all stated that this is hogwash and no teams are about to leave the ABA now.

Ok guys, time to take a step back and review some things here.

First of all, the six teams in question would not be leaving the ABA in mid-season because there isn't a league for them to go to. The CBA, USBL, and D-League are all in the middle of their seasons and would not take a team at this point.

To jump ship, franchise fees would have to be paid, new marketing done, changing of schedules, etc. Again, this just isn't going to happen in the middle of the year.

Take another step back for a second. Of course the teams in question are going to categorically deny something is going down; if in fact there is something going down. Teams will issue the standard "everything is fine" to fans because they do not want to jeopardize their standing in the league, nor do they want their fans to panic. If there is a lawsuit pending, or even being thought about, a team will not issue comment simply because they can't.

Teams may talk to the media, but it will be off the record. No offense anyone, but teams won't be talking to fans about this sort of thing. If there is something going on, the standard way is for a team to go to for example a trusted writer, the writer will "leak" parts of the story and say the information came from an un-named source. This is standard procedure..

Do I think something will happen with this? Well, this is the ABA and I have seen stranger things happen. I do know of the lack of representation at the All-Star Game, and John Salley saying on his Fox TV show something to the extent of "Holding the ABA All-Star Game in Halifax was a mistake". (This was when asked about the league by one of his co-hosts.) As always with the ABA, this could very well be just a rumor, and only a rumor. Until then, it is always interesting to see the chips fly and teams go bust.
