They had it start in January to accomodate the NBC TV deal. Now that they no longer play on NBC they moved back to March

Actually, it's a little bit earlier than the old April starts.

Schedule-wise, in terms of getting done before NFL training camps, very smart. Starting before the Super Bowl wasn't smart, and certainly didn't help TV ratings.
