1.) with a 45 team league over 90% of scheduled games have been played, much much much higher then in years past. Not perfect yet but getting close.

2.) New Strong Ownership - Nick Lachey, John Salley , Charlie Batch , Kyle Boller , Ann Iverson ( the mother of Allen Iverson ) , Alex Wolf ( Senior Writer for Sports illustrated.
* If owners with names as powerful as the ones listed above who are from the NBA, NFL , and famous music talents are buying into the ABA then you know the ABA is on the rise.

3.) former NBA legend and sports talk show host John "spider" Salley who also is part owner of the Hollywood Fame ABA team is the new ABA commisioner.

4.) Rochester who was hands down the best team in the ABA last year with a ( 30-4 ) record and won the ABA title, already has 4 losses and has had a tuff game each and every night out.
* the talent level in the ABA is getting deeper and deeper

5.) The new ABA site is much better then the old - they now have up to date standings and links to all the teams websites by just clicking on the teams names when looking at the standings.
* a lot of teams are now starting to post up to date stats on the individual team websites the ABA has promised universal stats from all teams coming soon on the new site they have delivered on what they have said so far so I beleive that will come into play soon .

6.) Regional play - by having 45 teams in the ABA it allows for inexpensive travel budgets by having the regular season played regionally so some teams never travel more then a handful of hours away on a bus ride.

7.) ABA power rankings - The top 24 aba teams are posted in updated power rankings this happens once or twice a week the ABA is right on top of that. It shows the up to date record of the team and which ranking they have, every team in the top 24 will be invited to the ABA playoffs it creates alot of excitement even for teams huvering around the 500. mark who still have a shot at making the playoffs right up until the end of the season.

8.) I am looking forward to the ABA playoffs , and to the continued sucess the ABA is having this season.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post about the positives in the ABA this season, its a fresh breath of air when all you are use to seeing is the same negative posts from the same 6 or 7 guys .... anyone notice how the new posters tell about the postives in the ABA such as myself, JamesABA, B@asketball, CTP and some more who I have forgot ....the negative ones are the same old ones over and over again , its nice to see the new posters are seeing the good and the change in the ABA , we should however still be kind to the stubborn 6 or 7 guys who have posted negative for years because like they say " you cant teach a old dog new tricks " so all we can do is eduacate them on the positives of the ABA.....

no matter how many times you paint it. Get through 2 seasons where all of your games are played and none of your teams fold during the season then you can be taken seriously as a professional league.

Established minor leagues like the AHL, af2, affliated minor league baseball leagues, etc. don't have these problems. So don't try to snowball us with your positives and makes us out to be the villains.

The only people you will be successful with are the ones who are to naive to understand what a sham Uncle Joe is running. So save your fresh breath! The old ABA has been completely tarnished by this new version ... that's a shame.

1.) with a 45 team league over 90% of scheduled games have been played, much much much higher then in years past. Not perfect yet but getting close.

However, there are still teams folding, which causes holes in the schedule. You should not count when a "replacement team" comes in to play a road game because the original road opponent can't show up. A "scheduled game" means both originally scheduled opponents show up at the scheduled venue to play the contest. And a 90% success rate of games being played averages out to one game missed out of every ten. That's still not acceptable.

And we don't really know if these games ARE being played. Since there is such little outside media coverage on these games, anyone who wants a score has to wait until one of the teams posts a press release on OSC or on their website. But we don't really know if the game has been played or not - how many of these games were actually played in real arenas and how many of them were played on a kitchen table using a strat-o-matic and dice?

2.) New Strong Ownership - Nick Lachey, John Salley , Charlie Batch , Kyle Boller , Ann Iverson ( the mother of Allen Iverson ) , Alex Wolf ( Senior Writer for Sports illustrated.
* If owners with names as powerful as the ones listed above who are from the NBA, NFL , and famous music talents are buying into the ABA then you know the ABA is on the rise.

Famous names do not equate to strong ownership. It just means that some famous names were willing to donate $20,000 to the Joe Newman Discretionary Fund. While Alex Wolff (it's two F's, crunchy) has turned his experience with the Frost Heaves into both a long-running blog and a strong franchise in Vermont, I haven't seen much from the rest of the names you mentioned. All it seems they've done is posed for pictures on the team website (the Hollywood Fame). BTW, that solid ownership of the Richmond Ballerz (Allen Iverson's mom's team) hasn't produced anything better than a 4-6 record, and the Detroit Panthers' first-place run was garnered by victories over creampuff teams like the Toledo Ice (191-66) and the Sauk Valley whatevertheyares.

3.) former NBA legend and sports talk show host John "spider" Salley who also is part owner of the Hollywood Fame ABA team is the new ABA commisioner.

And he's done... exactly... WHAT so far?

4.) Rochester who was hands down the best team in the ABA last year with a ( 30-4 ) record and won the ABA title, already has 4 losses and has had a tuff game each and every night out.
* the talent level in the ABA is getting deeper and deeper

Really... and if the talent pool is that strong in the ABA, who are the top ten scorers in the league this year, crunchy?

5.) The new ABA site is much better then the old - they now have up to date standings and links to all the teams websites by just clicking on the teams names when looking at the standings.
* a lot of teams are now starting to post up to date stats on the individual team websites the ABA has promised universal stats from all teams coming soon on the new site they have delivered on what they have said so far so I beleive that will come into play soon .

Big deal - the NBDL and CBA have had up-to-date standings and links to their team webpages for years. What took the ABA so long? And why should the ABA rely on its member teams to put the stats up when the league should make a concerted effort to use a statistics organization to gather all the stats and generate daily reports? Oh wait that would cost too much, it might take away from the salaries of the Director of Leasing.

6.) Regional play - by having 45 teams in the ABA it allows for inexpensive travel budgets by having the regular season played regionally so some teams never travel more then a handful of hours away on a bus ride.

Except when some of these teams fold or can't afford to hire a bus to get to the game, and someone else has to cover. Or when nearly entire divisions disappear, leaving teams to have to fly to opposing cities when their budget didn't include air travel?

Hey, if they really want to save some $$$$, cram all your players into two station wagons and hit the road. If it worked for the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1950's, why can't it work today? ;-)

Jeff Sagarin would have a field day with those power rankings. Everybody knows the power rankings are determined by Unca Joe at either his kitchen table or at McDonald's (where he always has breakfast with Dick Tinkham). It's an attempt to create a ranking similar to college basketball, due to the huge number of teams out there. But there's really no one out there other than Unca Joe who can come up with these stats.

8.) I am looking forward to the ABA playoffs , and to the continued sucess the ABA is having this season.

It's "success," crunchy. Why don't you scrape together the change out of your couch cushions, trot down to Staples, and buy a dictionary - or at least use the spell checker function on your computer.

If you want to be the naked emperor and have everybody think you're wearing clothes, then that's fine. But the ABA currently rivals the NIFL on several levels, and that's not a compliment. The best thing you can say about the ABA is that the best teams in the league eventually go to the D-League or to the CBA.

By the way... where are those stats, crunchy? You're late!

1.) with a 45 team league over 90% of scheduled games have been played, much much much higher then in years past. Not perfect yet but getting close.

There should be ZERO games that are not played in any professional league that are not weather related. Yes, ZERO!!! Having games cancelled shows ineptitude on the part of the league and those who are running each team. Yes, 90 percent is better, but again, there shouldn't be a single game cancelled.

3.) former NBA legend and sports talk show host John "spider" Salley who also is part owner of the Hollywood Fame ABA team is the new ABA commisioner.

And where is Mr. Salley anyway? There isn't anything on the website about him; no way to contact him, and he simply hasn't been heard from? Is he a figurehead or is he actually going to do something?

4.) Rochester who was hands down the best team in the ABA last year with a ( 30-4 ) record and won the ABA title, already has 4 losses and has had a tuff game each and every night out.
* the talent level in the ABA is getting deeper and deeper

First of all, the word is spelled "tough". Secondly, go back to folded teams, and only one division that is strong, that being the Blue North.

Yeah, it may look good, but where is the actual content??? No stats, no information on players, dead links to team sites, a promised message board that has not materialized, along with a host of other things. This is NOT a good site for those who are interested in the league and its players. Yeah, it looks nice, but that is it.

7.) ABA power rankings - The top 24 aba teams are posted in updated power rankings this happens once or twice a week the ABA is right on top of that. 8.) I am looking forward to the ABA playoffs , and to the continued sucess the ABA is having this season.

What success? Vermont is doing well and so is Rochester; other than that, teams are again folding; salaries aren't being paid, and the league is expanding when they can't support the teams that already exist. Success?

You just don't get it. We post the positives when we see them, but there have not been many to speak of. How do we know the positives when we don't know the players, where they stand, and we hear about attendance that is worse than the average third grade game that is played during a blizzard? Again, what some of us say is based on research and realism. I do my homework on this league and in many cases do not like what I have to see. There are countless minor leagues that do not have the problems that the ABA has. What are they doing right and why isn't the ABA following the positive steps they take? Oh yeah, it is because Joe Newmann has his family on the payroll and they aren't doing a thing!!

This pretty much convinces me that ABA 06 is our ole' buddy Uncle Joe.

It sounds like him...although if anybody could come up with the top 10 scorers in the league it would be him.

Of course, even he might not have access to team stats if they aren't being kept in the first place.

Yes, it's been better, but not to the degree you claim. Through January 4, there have been 380 ABA games scheduled, with 73 of them postponed or cancelled. This does not include Mexicali's games, rescheduled games for which a new date has been announced or the suspended game in Tijuana. That means that even being charitable, 80.8% of scheduled games have been played.

Agreed, both sides need to tone it down and de-personalize this debate. Challenge the other side, refute their arguments, make your points, but let's stop the name-calling. We can do better than that.

1) It was a 53 team league when the season was about to start, so let's call it a 53 team league that had 8 or so teams drop, fold, or "be suspended"....90% or 80% are both unacceptable. Only 98% and up is acceptable. 100% is preferrable.

2) Nick Lachey, Kyle Boller, and John Salley's team is drawing 150 fans a game...
Ann Iverson's team has a piss poor website despite her son's millions and a lackluster, quasi competitive team that has just cancelled its last 2 home games...

....so not all the Big Name ownership is "strong".

3) Salley has done absolutely nothing as Commissioner. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Tom Doyle, Joe Newman, and Brad Hester are running the league and addressing the problems - not the so called "Commissioner".

4) That the talent is getting better is provable by what? Yes the northeast looks like it has parity but who's seen all the teams? And without stats on each team there's no way to compare.

The league has lost some super talented on the court teams in the last two seasons: San Jose Skyrockets, Arkansas Rimrockers, Utah Snowbears, Gallup Talons, Florida Pitbulls, your beloved Pittsburgh Xplosion, Harlem Strong Dogs, Indiania AlleyCats, Long Beach Jam, and Socal Legends to name a few.

5) The new site artistically looks better but the old one never had real stats or standings. That the standings are updated is a start but here it is past the halfway point on the season and still no league stats. Its so stupidly easy that even Division 3 college conferences have them.

6) Regional play is one of the advantages of the ABA.

7) I have no problem with the Power Rankings. I believe Brad Hester does them now and not Joe. Brad is a logical guy but I question how you can rank teams that cannot be seen and judged. I think if the team wins, they go up, and if they lose, they go down. Even if the team beats a lowly team they will go up, and if the team loses to a top ranked team they will go down.

The problem will come when Brad has to judge the final week and a deserving team or two doesn't make it and they can't justify the decision. Of course, that wasn't an issue last year because they ABA could find 24 teams that were still in business to fill the playoff spots. So they ended up giving someone a 2nd bye and asking the 2-22 Boston Frenzy to join the playoffs!

8) We'll see how the scam artists in Halifax do with the All Star Weekend. Two years ago it was a 'friends and family' affair in Vegas, and last year the host team (Pitbulls) couldn't pay the stadium rent and the event was almost cancelled.

Last year's Great 8 was saved by the Razorsharks volunteering to host and pay for it. That of course, helped them squeak out the title.

I wouldn't go so far as to say this season has been a success. I would say most teams are far in the red and have only a few hundred fans if that. This will continue the foldings, 'suspensions', new ownership groups, and a parade of 'new owners' that we all abhore. Until they put some basic requirements on new owners and teach them how to market their teams, the league will always be a turnstile.

Here's an ABA Positive... HIV...

As in, all the teams are bound to die...

That was one of the most repulsive posts I've ever seen - either on this board or anywhere, including USEnet.

I don't know if you were just stating that to be funny or to spark conversation, but you failed at the former, and the only conversation you're getting is how totally insensitive and hurtful you are.

Consider that one of basketball's greatest stars, Magic Johnson, has lived for the past fifteen years with human immunodeficiency virus and all its destructive symptoms and effects, yet still extolling education and dignity and progress ong after such sophomoric jokes like "GAY=Got Aids Yet" have withered away.

You should be ashamed of yourself for posting that comment. If I had the ability to do so, I would fine you $50, with the fine going to an AIDS-related charity or to the American Red Cross.

The ABA may have a lot of things wrong with them, but resorting to analogies like the one you posted is absolutely reprehensible.

1.) with a 45 team league over 90% of scheduled games have been played, much much much higher then in years past. Not perfect yet but getting close.

How many teams are actually 'active' in the ABA currently? And are listed under the correct team name? The ABA website lists 49 teams in the standings. But by looking at the teams and records ... it's easy to tell that's far from accurate. Who's in charge of that at the ABA League office?

2.) New Strong Ownership - Nick Lachey, John Salley , Charlie Batch , Kyle Boller , Ann Iverson ( the mother of Allen Iverson ) , Alex Wolf ( Senior Writer for Sports illustrated.
* If owners with names as powerful as the ones listed above who are from the NBA, NFL , and famous music talents are buying into the ABA then you know the ABA is on the rise.

No offense to the names listed above ... but celebrity status does not always equate to having the ability to manage or promote a sports league or franchise of which they have a vested interest in.

3.) former NBA legend and sports talk show host John "spider" Salley who also is part owner of the Hollywood Fame ABA team is the new ABA commisioner.

Actually, I wish the ABA was generating a great deal more merit and respect. Maybe that would open up some opportunities for John Salley to feel comfortable in using his name, history, and resources to help the league grow.

4.) Rochester who was hands down the best team in the ABA last year with a ( 30-4 ) record and won the ABA title, already has 4 losses and has had a tuff game each and every night out.
* the talent level in the ABA is getting deeper and deeper

Yes, the talent pool in the ABA this year appears to be much higher across the competitive tier of teams. That's a valuable asset to the league. But what is even more important, is the ability of (all) organizations to gain stability, be $liquid, retain players services by ensuring that contracts are satisfied and create opportunities for these players to continue to develop their game, in order to have a chance to move forward to the next level

5.) The new ABA site is much better then the old - they now have up to date standings and links to all the teams websites by just clicking on the teams names when looking at the standings.
* a lot of teams are now starting to post up to date stats on the individual team websites the ABA has promised universal stats from all teams coming soon on the new site they have delivered on what they have said so far so I beleive that will come into play soon.

There is truth in the saying; "Not everything that glitters, is gold."

The new ABA website is not better than the old. There is soo much erroneous and out-dated info contained on the site. Standings are not up to date. Not all team websites are updated correctly. The ABA really cannot promise anything, because they don't have or will not 100% commit the resources required to deliver a professional final product.

6.) Regional play - by having 45 teams in the ABA it allows for inexpensive travel budgets by having the regular season played regionally so some teams never travel more then a handful of hours away on a bus ride.

Again, How many teams? #1 travel is never inexpensive! What has happened in the ABA, is that regional divisions have lost members at increasing rates, which makes it very difficult to make scheduling changes and almost always, increases the travel budget.

I think everyone alike, enjoys the idea of experiencing the excitement of "The Tournament." And having a Cinderella team go deep adds some brilliance to to the pearl ... although, I'm not sure that the ABA needs a 'one-game-and-you're-out' - 24 team playoff system. There is never enough money at season's end for a large % of teams (even the top teams) to make a playoff run ... so why make it more difficult? I'd pair down the teams to most competitive and deserving ... and let it play out.

8.) I am looking forward to the ABA playoffs , and to the continued sucess the ABA is having this season.

I'm not quite sure that the ABA League Office is having much success this year ... but there are a good# of member teams that are showing some fantastic effort, both on and off the court. Everyone just needs to put their heads together, and figure out how we can increase those attendance figures in every market!

If you did ... you wouldn't respond to posts by others the way you do ... that's not educating!

IMO ...

That it is in HORRIBLE taste, totally uncalled for, and if it is an attempt at a joke, you failed.

Agreed - Preeths can that be removed????

Edit: Just saw your post, Preeths.

Anyone know why the Detroit Panthers changed venues? They were supposed to play all home games at the Buck Weeber Center (River Rouge High School gym). The league still says they are. The team website says home games are at Highland Park High School. I plan on going to the Jan 20 game against Rochester. It would be nice to know for sure where they are playing. Past experience tells me it is pointless to e-mail the team. If they have left the Weeber Center, my first thought (maybe incorrectly) is thet they didn't pay the rent to River Rouge and had to move on. If I am right, then so much for the strong ownership of Charlie Batch. It would be interesting to see if he shows up at any games now that he has nothing to do until the fall. I'm not holding my breath.

Another positive. (Peoria Kings coach) Sergio McClain now has a nice throne to sit on during games.
