Does anyone know when the meeting between the GBL and SDSU is scheduled for?

Hi Mary,

Unfortunately, SDSU has not followed through on their statement to you that they would be setting up a meeting with the GBL in the next few weeks.

Thanks for your efforts to show support for the Surf Dawgs by contacting the university directly and explaining the impact of their actions.

We're doing all we can to get the issues resolved by the end of December to make a 2007 season possible for the Surf Dawgs at SDSU. It continues to be a struggle with the university that is difficult to understand given their benefit from the team, fans, league over the last two years.

Given the current situation with SDSU we have been exploring alternate sites in the San Diego area that could host the team but there is no adequate facility with lights at the moment. We do like the San Diego market longterm and have initiated new stadium discussions with several communities in the county but that takes significant time.

So that's the current situation for the GBL in San Diego. I appreciate your emails and please call anytime if you want to discuss in length.

The only other facilities that have lights in San Diego County (up North or otherwise) do not have stadium style seating. Heck, the only High School in the district that has lights, I believe, is Escondido HS. But, the North County Waves play their home games there and again no seating. I know the Elsinore field is jammed up for the summer season, but that SURE would be a great place to play, wouldn't it?

Too bad Barona Casino's field doesn't have more of what is needed at this stage. They'd probably even put up some money to have a PRO team to play there, which could possibly draw them some business. It's actually not a bad field. Put in some lights, expand the seating, clubhouse, etc. Currently, I believe, the Stars (semi-pro) use that field as their home field, as well as the SDABL.

Time to build a field of dreams some where in San Diego County...

From SDSU - "The scheduling of the meeting is being handled by our general counsel's office and GBL's attorney who is located in San Francisco."

Lawyers meeting can never be good news.

And a slow process. Hopefully, they realize that spring is only 4 months away. There would also be little time to market or sell tickets.

I was wondering...

What about Saddleback College? http://www.saddleback.edu/

I don't believe things went too well there for the WBL (Vigilantes) when they played at Saddleback College, but the field worked out well. I don't remember the details about what went on between the league and them. I worked out there with the Sonoma County Crushers and enjoyed being there. Has anyone investigated their facilities as a possibility? Decent community, where there's really not a whole lot to do in and around the immediate area. And I remember there being a pretty good crowd at their games.

Just a thought...

Might work out for the GBL, but doesn't do us down here in San Diego much good.

Hey Commish, did the lawyers meet yet?

Actually, it "might" help both, if something was to come of it. Since there are no other fields in San Diego County that meet the requirements and so far there has been no word as to any progress with State. It could be considered the next best thing.

The drive is not all that bad, plus it's a bit closer than Long Beach and Fullerton. Another added benefit, would be to the players, since it's not too far of a bus ride for the three teams that would play in Long Beach, Fullerton, and Mission Viejo.

It would be better than nothing at all, wouldn't it? Or am I off base?

Just trying to help with ideas...

I love that you are ever the optimist. As a former host mom, having a team in Mission Viejo would be of no help at all to me. I've never made a trip up to Lake Elsinore, so I'm sure I'd never make it up to M.V. It would be nice and close for the guys traveling between LB and Fullerton, but maybe because they are so close that would oversaturate that market.

Still waiting to hear about the meeting.

Hey now, I'm allowed a little bit of optimism...

I'm not too sure about the market saturation, since Mission Viejo is further down South and definitely would take on a different demographic. One way or another, it's all going to work out in the end. But, I'll continue to hope that something may happen to cause an agreement to be struck, even if just for one more season. After which, different arrangements could be made for future seasons.

Never been called an optimist before. Not sure whether to say thank you or hit you with a wet fish. :)

Tis the season, so you NEVER know what might happen.

Thinking good thoughts for today's meeting of the lawyers. I just hope, good or bad, the GBL makes a decision soon and lets it be known to all.

So, um, is it ok to be optimistic today? *smirk*
