View Full Version : Another move
I just came across an online version of the Sacramento Business Journal, which announces that the Fresno Heatwave will be re-locating to that city before December. Apparently the owners are not happy with the turnouts of a couple hundred and are hoping for 1,500 in the Capital Capital city.

I saw that this morning and had to shake my head at that one. Relocating a franchise during the season????? Wow, that will really take off in a city that supports the NBA as well as they do. How about marketing, publicity, etc? Yup, they are going to come to town and draw thousands when no one knows they are even there.

"Hoping." That's a hell of a ticket-sales strategy right there.

One positive that came out of this article is a statement made by Mr. Newman, where he stated that comparing the ABA to the NBA is like comparing McDonalds to Ruth Chris. In the past he would not have made such a truthful statement this to me shows some growth on his part.
In the past his comparason with the ABA and NBA was McDonalds and Burger King...
More apt is McDonald's (NBA) and Sandy's (a burger chain that went out of business in the 1970's) as the ABA.
Or maybe Xbox (NBA) and Colecovision (ABA).....
any other comparison ideas?
Interesting that he compares ABA to McDonalds (thousands of locations) to NBA-Ruth Chris (maybe a hundred locations in the largest cities)...McDonald's don't usually pack up and move across town every year though!

One's expensive but gives you good value and leaves you feeling nicely satisfied.
The other you only go to if there's nothing else around. It's cheap, but you don't expect much.

When Joe made that comparison, he probably thought that the ABA was Ruth's Chris :p After all ABA teams can beat NBA teams you know....

along with rosters are still being anounced and teams changing venus, the usage of other team names and logos are starting to surface, just look at afew teams and you'll see: Orangemen, Heats and now the Hawks hey isn't that the Atlanta Hawks logos again another trademark & patent law violation haven't they got enough from the first law suit issued by Syracuse and Miami Heat in the first season when they try this the first time and here they are doing this again, that shows you how much joe really cares, it's the team problem and not his he's not the one getting sued, he's to busy dodging the others.

Syracuse University changed the schools nick name from the Syracuse Orangemen/Orangewomen to simply Syracuse Orange. Orangemen is up for grabs , as far as the other teams I dont know much about that.

Talk about getting one's facts straight....

Although SU officially changed the names of its sports teams from the Orangemen/Orangewomen to “The Orange” more than two years ago, the university still argues in the suit that its trademark on the Orangemen name needs protection.
The name is important to fans, even though it’s no longer in official use, says Kevin Morrow, SU spokesman. The university still actively licenses the Orangemen trademark to companies for production of apparel and other memorabilia.
“It’s a registered trademark we continue to protect,” Morrow says. “In the public’s mind, the name is very clearly associated with Syracuse University. We have fans and alumni who still feel a special attachment to the Orangemen name.”
Orangemen is very definitely not "up for grabs," hence the lawsuit.
