AND THE TEAM NAME IS...
THE KATY RUFF RIDERS

Congratulations to Anthony Borjas for submitting the name Katy Ruff Riders. Anthony has won 2 season ticket packages for 2007 and has the opportunity to be recognized during the inaugural game ceremonial coin toss.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Press Conference today and who participated in the "Name the Team Contest." Without the help of the community, we would not have such a fantastic team name.

Season tickets go on sale Monday November 20th and can be purchased by calling 1-800-585-3737 or online at www.KatyRuffRiders.com. The website is still under construction and will be updated with schedule, tryout, and ticket information shortly.

Sincerely,

What do you think? (I'm surprised phydeaux72 hasn't posted on this yet)

I like the name, but the spelling "Ruff" looks REALLY childish to me (no offense meant--just my impression). I'm pretty sure Teddy Roosevelt's crew spelled it "Rough" themselves.

Do you think Katy are trying to avoid some trademark heat from the CFL's Saskatchewan team?

Michael Val
(who never understood how a pro football league could have two teams with the same team name--Saskatchewan and Ottowa--and they met in the Grey Cup, too!)

I probably would have, but I was in Katy all day. Besides, that's why I have people like Molly on my staff.

Because east and west started as two seperate leagues. And to top it off, one roughrider was a cowboy, the other was a logger riding the river to the mill.

Bismarck Roughriders and Peoria Roughriders have already been used in indoor football.

I do agree that 'Ruff' seems a bit childish, but I guess that all goes with the logo. Besides, they could always go with a dog/cowboy theme as well. Who knows.

The name was a huge hit at the press conference this morning. I think that once everyone sees it with the logo and colors, they will change their mind about the way it's spelled. That's why we chose the spelling, because we felt it complimented the colors and logo. It had nothing to do with possible trademark infringement. But I appreciate the comments and concern.

Besides, "Ruff" Riders couldn't be considered any more childish than Kats (AFL Nashville), Xplorers (af2 Memphis), Jungle Kats (af2 Cincinnati), Yard Dawgz (af2 Oklahoma City), Xplosion (CIFL Kalamazoo), or Outlawz (CIFL Lehigh Valley).

Being from Saskatchewan I have to get in on this one.
Actually Ottawa had the name first, they were the Rough Riders. They dropped it for a few years in the 1920's and that is when Saskatchewan picked it up....spelling it Roughriders.
I can't remember exactly how the groups in Ottawa and Saskatchewan were related but they were...same group of settlers or something like that.

Let me guess...
A dog riding a horse?
