View Full Version : How much do ABA basketball players make anyway?

Just curious. Because I know that most local ABA teams go into bankruptcy, and rely on sponsors etc, so I wonder how much do they pay their players. The ones on the court, and the ones sitting on the bench.

I guess that depends on if you are asking what they are under contract to make or what they actually make. The two can be very different. I can tell you, based on the only TV media attention that the team ever got, what a couple of Detroit Wheels starting players were to make last season. Justin Hall had a contract to be paid $1k per month. As of the story, which aired well after the season was over, he had been paid $200 for the entire season. Dave Myers was under contract for $1,600 per month. He never said what he was actually paid but it is safe to assume it wasn't the amount of his contract as the story was about players not being paid and he was willing to appear on camera.

The league has a $120,000 salary cap. Teams like Rochester use much of it, while there are teams that pay players a nominal fee. I believe the OC Buzz paid guys $50 or $100 a game, and they agreed to that and moved forward. Teams with rich local talent can still field competitive teams despite paying little money.

I'm with the Washington DC media. From what I hear, Maryland went over the salary cap, however no penalty or tax was assessed to them. I also heard, Lawrence Moten and White Chocolate both made $1,200 per week. The owner, now ABA President has a steep pocket.
