View Full Version : Richmond Ballers?

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Richmond Warriors will become the Richmond Ballers because the "Warriors" nickname was the same as the NBA's Golden State team. What about the "Ballers" nickname being the same as the ABA's Twin City Ballers?

The ABA had a proposed Omaha/Council Bluffs franchise that was to be called the River City Ballers, but the team moved to Lincoln as the Thunder before the team's inaugural 2005-06 season.

The IBL had the 2005 San Jose Ballers, who became the 2006 Tri-City Ballers, and now the Tri-City Titans.

Is that true? There is a team in the NBA called the "Warriors"????? Since when?!? How could you expect the Richmond group to be aware of such an obscure name in a league almost nobody has heard of?

The ABA is the "biggest professional sports league in the world (or something like that)" and should not have tp take a backseat to any other team or league.

It's an outrage.

How come the Peoria Kings get to keep their name?

How come the Peoria Kings get to keep their name?

Because they aren't going to tell the corporate sponsors who essentially paid their franchise fee no.

Although IMO any Peoria basketball team should have been named the Cats.

I thought it might be a conflict of interest... I wonder how the Twin City Ballers feel about Richmond name change. You do not find NBA teams with similar names. I agree with the post about why the ABA has to take a back seat because the NBA is uncomfortable with “Richmond Warriors because it’s tied to Iverson camp”.

Well if you ask me it sounds like a conflict of interest issue internal to the NBA and the ABA has to suffer the consequences. For example, if I work for an insurance company and I go open up my own insurance company while I am still employed.. Humm.. At least for the Ballers "oops I mean the Twin City Ballers - don’t want to start any name confusion out there!" Richmond is in a different division... It ultimately puts a bad taste in people mouth.

I hate to break it to you, ABA, but the Golden State Warriors have been around since I was a kid growing up on Long Island(I've lived here in Pa. for almost 20 years now). I was a New York Knicks fan back then.
As far as names, I like Richmond Warriors better than 'Ballers'. Besides, teams share names all the time(although not in the same league-that I'm aware of). What's the big deal?

Ummmmmmm...
Please go back and re-read my post, and pay particular attention to the last line (quoted below for added emphasis):

The ABA actually had two teams called Navigators last season, in Tacoma and Norfolk. It solved that problem by attrition, as Norfolk sort of drifted off to 2006-2007.

There are times when two teams in the same league share the same nickname. I know it occurred for a long time in the Canadian Football League, with the Ottawa Roughriders and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

It currently occurs in the American Hockey League, where the Norfolk Admirals and the Milwaukee Admirals share the same name. How did this happen? The Norfolk Admirals used to be the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL, they moved up to the A. A few years later, when the IHL folded, several of those franchises - including the Milwaukee Admirals - moved to the A.

The best part is trying to listen to a Norfolk-Milwaukee radio broadcast, and trying to figure out which Admiral scored.

Actually, the Milwaukee franchise is named after a 1950s era brand of appliances and Norfolk is self-explanatory (Navy)

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch on the Ballers:
"This is a tremendous win-win for both," Paul Manning, U-Turn founder and president said. "We're looking forward to moving to that next level . . . a professional basketball team, a collaboration with us doing what we do best - training athletes.
"On the flipside, you have brand names like Iverson and ABA, which can help us with attracting people. It's excellence and excellence."
Iverson said: "I've gotta crawl before I can walk. And I don't mind doing it because of the fact that I'm doing something positive. I'm doing something great. Something that's gonna hopefully be a great thing. My Richmond Ballers will live on well after I'm gone. And hopefully one day, I can pass it on to my son."

Mrs. Iverson must be planning to be gone sometime within the next few weeks. That's the only way I see her son getting the team due to the average life span of an ABA franchise.

..are still a brand name of Maytag, which is now owned by Whirlpools. We bought an Admiral dryer a few years ago.

With the right sponsorship, Benton Harbor could have been named the Whirlpools, as that city in Michigan is their corporate headquarters. Has a nice ring to it, I think. A lot better than the Twin City Ballers.

The AHL point is that the Norfolk franchise had an existing nickname, and they are in diffferent conferences anyway. They don't even play each other in the regular season.
