It has been a while since I kept stats or scored a game officially, so forgive my ingnorance. In last nights game between the Whitewings vs the Aces, Kevin Griffin hit a flyball with runners on 2nd & 3rd. The Aces' CF dropped the ball (apparently for a clear error) and at least one run scored. Would Griffin be credited with an RBI even though it was an error? I know if you walk or sac fly and a run scores you get an RBI, but I'm not sure about an error. I don't think you do but in the box scores from the game it looks funny because the White Wings won the game 4-2 but they only have 2 RBI given the impression no one else scored and the game was 2-2. How do you account for those runs by error? Thanks.

Great question. If the fly ball was deep enough he should get an RBI. How about a botched simple double play with one out and runners at 1st and 3rd where a run scores after the out at 2nd and a wild throw to 1st. It should be an unearned run but it's not. The guidelines for such situations do not accept double plays as automatic. IS THE RUN THEN AN RBI? It should be if the run is earned in this situation.

Can you get an RBI on a fielders choice? I ask because unless the runner reaches 1st base on a throwing error, there is a chance that a botched double play could be scored as a fielder's choice.

I think a RBI has to occur by a walk, sacrifice, base hit, ground out. Good question. I'm not 100% sure of every way a RBI occurs. Is a long foul fly ball caught in a deep coorner which a runner scores on an RBI? I think it's not. Anybody know?

That would be a sacrifice fly, so the answer would be yes an RBI would be awarded.

I know a sacrifice,as I said earlier, is a RBI, but is a foul out and a fly out both criteria for a sacrifice? Hmm, I didn't know for sure a foul ball could be a sacrifice-- since the hitter did not sacrifice a good at bat just to hit an unluckily caught foul ball. Thanks.
