View Full Version : Does the APFL qualify now?
I was one of those who supported the APFL years ago when my local team was in AF2..
Long story made short.. Wichita is now in the APFL..
Well after 3 seasons of kicking the snot out of everyone else, the Kansas Koyotes lost their first game ever on opening night against Wichita.
The Koyotes did not lose again till late in the season against... TADA ..Wichita again.. This was also the first ever loss at home by the Koyotes.
Wichita was awarded the regular season champion and the right to host the championship game..
Kansas then beat Iowa (#2 vs. #3 seeds) to advance to the championship game..
NOW.. The league.. (aka the owners of the Koyotes & Wichita Aviators)
Has decided that the game, (Which was supposed to be Saturday Night, July 29th) Will NOT be played in Wichita and will be moved to Topeka, Kansas..
Now that Ralph Adams and the APFL in Shiveresque and Hainesque fashion has screwed over fans.. Do we qualify now to appear on OSC???
OOPS Nevermind Paul..
I forgot this just makes the APFL more rinky dink than ever.. LOL
OH.. and thats right.. People need to get paid to qualify..
We strike out on that too.. The Wichita GM hasn't been paid since April.
Maybe we'll get lucky in Wichita and move on to our 4th indoor team after this season.. PLEASE UIF!! LOL
Go (IFL-Warlords, AF2-Stealth, APFL-Aviators, UIF-???)
Thanks for the forum Paul to vent a little...

1. The APFL isn't on the site because it doesn't get enough newspaper attention.
2. Wichita could get the af2 back with their new arena.

Actually, the APFL really isn't on here because (this was the reason I was told) they couldn't contact the league for the schedule and list of teams.

What kind of league has partial members? (e.g. Columbia and Nebraska) Four full time members and 3 make the playoffs. Nothing but a joke in my book...

OSC is a professional sports information site. The APFL is still technically a semi-professional league, as I don't believe players are GUARANTEED money.
They get paid, but it's based on attendance or something. That's the only reason it's not covered.

I apologize all...
I simply was venting my frustration for a league that I defended before I even had a home town team in the league..
I didn't mean to start a discussion with the pro's and con's of the league being represented here.. It's all been hashed out before.. I don't recall the exact reasons.. But, suffice it to say they were valid and one would have to wear something much stronger than rose colored glasses to argue the point further..

And again, Thanks Paul..
I visit often for far more than just indoor football..

Bill, glad to see you coming by. We're always glad to keep half an eye on the APFL.

I don't know, but the recent APFL chaos (the championship game may be moved, prompting the team that won the right to host it to not play) puts it in the same boat as the NIFL and AIFL.

I kind of want the league to just give up and merge with the UIF. It will be better for every team in the league, and there won't be the pressures of running a league for the Wichita and Kansas owners along with running the teams.

Yep.. That's why I called Ralph Adams moves Shiveresque and Hainesesque.. lol
Last I heard the Aviator players took a vote tonight at practice..
And unanimously voted NOT to go to Topeka on August 5th to play the championship game...
So the league has been told..
July 29th in Wichita or not at all..
(I am so proud of my team!! lol)

I like that discision. They earned the right, they should host the championship game.

I can see Wichita successful in either the UIF or af2 under the right conditions. Pre-Key ownership (and even in his first year), the Stealth weren't in too bad a shape.
Last season, things came together at the last second and the team was still competitive. This year, the team had to find a venue that wouldn't break the bank. Wichita Ice Center was far from ideal, but it worked. It was a strange setup and a kicker's nightmare with a short roof.
Iowa has been pretty successful in its first two seasons. I can't see the market work for af2 (too small) and I can't see the UIF letting it in because the Beef might beef (just a few miles between the two venues).
Topeka has become a minor-league nightmare. It should be able to support about any minor-league sport short of say Class AAA baseball, but about every team there has petered out.
Missouri (Sedalia) has been underfunded since it's inception and St. Joseph was a royal clustersnuggle of the first order. Sedalia may be just too small and St. Joe just too burned.
If I had 3 or 4 million lying around to buy the APFL (actually only a few thousand to buy the league and the rest for operating costs and marketing for the first two to three years), I'd keep Wichita, Topeka and Iowa and market them like the dickens. Expand to Lincoln, Springfield (Mo.) and either Kearney or Grand Island (Neb.).
Future expansion in Johnson County (Kan.) and Joplin would work if new arenas are ever built.
Despite the problems (mostly due to lack of jack), I give everyone in the APFL a lot of credit for trying. It's low budget, but it's still decent football. There's still too much spin when bad things happen for my taste. For all of Ralph Adams' miscues (and there have been some dooseys including this one), he hasn't been as bad as CS and AH.
If solid ownership could be found, I could see either a solid regional league or a good bid for say the UIF or becoming a division of one of the new proposed leagues.
Thus endeth the rant.

Ya... And what killed AF2 in Wichita.. (other than Key and his bad business dealings in other areas that caused him to give the Stealth back to AF2)
Was the impending closing down of the Kansas Coliseum for two years to come into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act...
Who would have bought the team under those conditions?
My fear that we would end up losing the CHL-Wichita Thunder was more than enough incentive to vote for the new arena. Glad it passed.. Course.. As it played out none of the local teams would have had to go idle for a couple seasons.

I don't think the Beef would mind the Blackhawks in the UIF. They worked together this offseason and held a scrimmage for charity.

I was thinking in terms of the geographic area most teams get in a league where another team can't be placed. I know that the CHL team in Loveland, Colo., went ape when a team was placed in nearby Broomfield, even though it was just a couple of miles out of Loveland's (the Colo. Eagles) protected area.

When the Beef were in the NIFL I was told that they blocked the NIFL from pursuing the Blackhawks.

In hindsight, the Blackhawks are probably glad they didn't get pursued by the NIFL.. Just ask the fans and former owners of the APFL team who were supposed to play in St. Joe..
As much of a mess that this championship game date/venue fiasco is for Wichita fans.. It's still better than the crud they went through in St. Joe.
Our GM... Last night on the sports... Said the Wichita Aviator players deserved to move to another level... I wouldn't be surprised if there was never another APFL game played in Wichita.

Adams has been taking some big shots in the Topeka paper as well. Wouldn't surprise me if it spelled the end of the APFL all together.

Yep.. I noticed that ... And I wouldn't be surprised either..
I went to WIBW TV-Topeka online the other night..
And got a video clip of their report on the APFL...
They didn't interview Adams.. They were interviewing Mike McCoy, our GM in Wichita.. I guess Adams was hiding and his puppet.. Oops.. I mean commissioner Childs was hiding too..
And the laughs never stop...
Now the APFL is trying to set up a game for the Koyotes in Topeka on August 5th.. And call it a championship game.. LMAO

The biggest thing going against Wichita in a search for new investors/league will be the Wranglers (Class AA Texas League baseball) question. The city and the sports commission will be keeping the Wranglers up front until that problem is solved or resovled. That's a two-pronged problem because the NBC (National Baseball Congress, summer college ball) is tied to the Wranglers.
I have a feeling it won't be a problem by 2009 (or whenever the new downtown arena is finished). I'll bet Wichita is back to af2 by then.
Interesting rumor from what I consider a very reliable source.
Sounds like the Koyotes will be matching up against the San Angelo Stampede in the game next week.

We will finally have an idea of the relative talent level in the APFL, though IFL rules are more AIFL than APFL.

SO... A team that isn't even a member of the APFL is going to play for the Championship Game? NAH.. There's no way they would propose such a farce... They must just be calling it an Inter-League game..
Course.. I would have never thought they would pull the crud they have pulled to this point...
It's OK though..
I was where I should have been tonight, 7pm , With the Wichita Aviators in the building.. Koyotes didn't show up..
Got some signatures on my "Wichita Aviators - 2006 APFL Champs" poster.. lol
We won't be back in the APFL in 2007. And I use the term "we" as in the team now known as the Aviators.

I'm really disappointed. This is the first year that I checked the APFL out. The Blackhawks have a first class organization in Council Bluffs. Franchises in what are considered the "upper" leagues could learn a thing or two from their owner.
I had a blast every game I went to, nailbiter to blowout. The league seemed to be making great strides.
This year couldn't have ended any worse if someone was intentionally trying to sabotage not only the season but the league.

Man, it would be really awkward if San Angelo won the game.
And I agree fwp, the Blackhawks owner is a great guy. He is still the only owner that has replied to an email of mine.

I wonder if Adams is trying to beat McCoy to the punch for an IFL team next year.
It looks like the Aviators (in their current form) are dead. I could see two Aviators trying to play next year -- a McCoy Avs and an Adams Avs. All of this would leave Iowa in a weird position as the most solid franchise in the league, but locked out of the best league available unless the Beef were to waive territorial rights. The Minutemen are broke. In a court situation, I could see Adams and McCoy fighting over the Avs with McCoy having a good claim for sweat equity.
Would the IFL beef about Topeka and San Angelo playing? Would people in Topeka show up after all the stuff of the last two weeks? Did I leave the iron on?
While I have a feeling WIC would have been perfectly all right in hosting the championship game this week, I was at the NBC today and parking overflowed from the baseball stadium's lot to WIC, so Adams could have argued parking. (I was at the Aviators-Iowa game several weeks ago and WIC parking overflowed to LD during the NBC Midwest Regionals, which didn't draw well. The Avs had maybe 1,200 fans that game). But when the LD lot overflows and WIC parking isn't available, it goes off to the grass lot north of the stadium and the Baptist church lot, so that would still be a weak argument.

It's not like I am in the know, or talk to a lot of people.. But I've always heard good things about the Iowa organization.. They probably have to be weighing their options about right now too..
And your last sentence says it all.
