View Full Version : Is the ABA real?

The more and more I read this league's website the more I wonder if it is actually just a bunch of crap some idiot made up. Is this the Church of Scientology's version of how basketball should be played? (The more you decieve the public the more they will watch your games?) Look at this and please correct me if I am wrong:

1. The league seems to give franchise to any Tom, Dick, and Harry who wants a team in any town or village. I used to live near Gallup, NM and lets be real there are not even 4,000 people in Gallup and I doubt there are more the 7,000 in a 30 mile radius whom most are too drunk by noon to be at a basketball game at night. They play in an old middle school gym (that is if the ever actually played). They have changed nicknames and once claimed to be a team for Native American stars and now do not claim that. According to the website they only seemed to play a team from Santa Fe.

2. The 3-D rule: What kind of crap is this? What is next? A 25 point basket like in Rock N Jock? If I understand it right if your opponent has not crossed the 10 second line and you steal the ball and make a basket you get a point added? That has got to be the stupiediest rule on the planet. It does absolutely no good other then maybe for teams to press. The rule makes a mockery of James Naismith. The dude must be rolling over in his grave over that one.

3. The league has had more teams then there stars in the universe. Teams come and go like Liz Taylor's husbands. If I am correct no league will survive without decent stability but I guess it works for the time being. If 30 of your teams fold then you find 30 more to replace them. Having so many teams is a bad idea. There is no way in hell a league office could keep up with the activities and books of all their teams. Opens things wide open for corruption. It seems to me also that only about 30% of the teams ever finish the season.

4. This league makes a mockery of the name American Basketball Association. You know this league when it was ABA 2000 it believed someday it would rival the NBA. Not this one pal.

5. What kind of schedule does this league have? It seems that each team just plays whomever they want whenever they want. Yeah lets play the team that is only a hour a way 30 times in the same season.

6. The league commish is a cocky self server. Everything I read that he says seems to be something you hear from a used car salesman or a politician. He talks about how great his league is compared to others yet the average moron could tell that his ship has been taking on water for some time now. From what I hear is if you criticize him becomes a pompous jerk. I found it funny when recently he stated in his ask the CEO column that "Same with San Jose. We like and respect Kazumi and James Hasegawa. We think they got wrong advice from people with questionable motives. We wish them well. We have replaced them in Northern California" What do you mean questionable motives? Maybe they actually wanted some security in the league their team plays in. Maybe they want the team to make roadtrips and know the other team and fans will be there waiting for them to play.

7. Playoff format? Single elimination tournament with teams ranked like they are some kind of BCS team. That is absolutely unfair. Who has the time to go see all 100 teams play. Who would risk it? The way it sounds that chances are if you show up to a scheduled game there probably will not be a game that night because one of the teams folded. Then teams get bumped from the playoffs or decide not to participate so whoever can afford to be in the playoffs replaces them. Not to mention the playoffs seem suspiciously rigged. It is really odd the championship tournament is in Rochester anyways. You would think it would be better off centrally located. Guess what? The home team won!

8. A team made a big news story (one of the few you ever hear about the ABA in the mainstream media) because a team owner stormed onto the court and fired the head coach (who was a woman. I am not saying having a woman coach is bad but it smelled to be a publicity stunt to begin with) and made a scene in front of everybody. The team incidently did not return the next season.

9. A good number of teams have bolted for the "other leagues." The league commish refers to them as that and puts them down every chance he gets like a child. To be honest who would not want to have their team under the umbrella of the NBA in the D-League or the CBA who has been around even before the original ABA. From what I hear, several cities have even told the ABA to go else where in hopes of getting D-League or CBA teams. Then the ABA has enough nerve to put expansion teams in those cities but I doubt they last since the majority of ABA teams seem to play in high school gyms. If wanted to see a game in a high school gym I would go watch a high school game.

10. Team nicknames suck. Chicago Rockstars? Do they think somebody might mistake them for the Bulls and show up at their game thinking they get a concert too? Oh come on. Florida Pit Bulls (named after the energy drink. What makes me laugh is that Pit Bull was a major sponsor of the ABA and yet the team bolts the league.) Vermont Frost Heaves. Sounds more like what I do after I have had too much to drink and not any food in my stomach. The Atlanta Vision? Are they sponsored by a local eyedoctor? Baltimore Pearls. That is just stupid. Brooklyn Wonders. Is that because their fans wonder if they will play any games? Buffalo Silverbacks. What the hell is a silverback (their logo is an ape)? Cedar Rapids Runningguns. When did firearms get legs? That would be real scary. Hammond Rollers. Is gambling even legal there and what reputable league or team would want to be associated with gambling? Maybe they are run by Pete Rose. Houston Havoc. No the Rockets did not change their name but there will be plenty of Havoc when the team folds and other teams again have to adjust their schedules for the 20th time this season. Las Vegas Venom. This is not bad but it is like the 20th nickname a team in Vegas has had. And the list goes on. But you can not forget the old Detroit Dogs. That logo gave small children nightmares.

11, Division names What a silly idea to name teams after old ABA players. First of all the league has no resemblence to the old ABA and let alone do you think those great players want to be associated with this mess called a league? By the time the season finishes half the divisions lose all their teams and not to mention the playoffs seem to have no bearing on divisions so why have them?

Well folks that is about all I can think of right now but I am sure more will come to mind. It is interesting to see which teams will be a part of the league next week. LOL

Buffalo Silverbacks? A gorilla?

See Atlanta Silverbacks, United Soccer League D-1.

Well, everyone in the business is already aware that there's no more good nicknames...

US Census bureau says Gallup had an estimated 19,378 people as of the summer of 2005.

Everything else you said is right on, though, and it's stuff most of us have been saying for years.

Except for pencil-pushers who have never worked in the operations of a team or a league or ever sold a ticket. But then again, they know everything.

Now I realize I drastically underestimated the Gallup population but none the less the league has no business there. That is asking for disaster. It is funny how the league requires teams to have a minimum of 3000 seats and yet they play mostly in high school gyms and I think some teams play in YMCAs and places like that.

Yes the ABA is real. It is a real scam. The league's MO is this: Keep finding people dumb enough to pony up $10K with doing any research. Hence the 30 expansion teams every year, many of which never play a game. But hey that's another $300K in the account, so what does he care whether or not they play?

The league has failed to complete even HALF of its schedule in ANY of the seasons if has played.

Does that sound like a "real" league to you?
