Buffalo is one of the most notoriously segregated cities in America. The city is divided down the middle between East and West sides, with Main Street serving as the dividing line. East Buffalo is black; West Buffalo is white. (Buffalo’s legendary idiotic ex-mayor “Jimmy Six-Pack” Griffin once told a radio-talk-show caller that East Buffalo was the last part of the city to be plowed in a snowstorm because residents in the rest of the city had to go to work.) As such, Main Street has always been a tense place. Tony’s is located right on the east side of Main Street, along the racial dividing line.
Pitliangas was murdered on April 14, but there were several other shootings in Buffalo this spring, including one that took place in a grocery store. Buffalo’s finest originally arrested a mentally disabled man named Raemon Woods for the two shootings, and Woods quickly confessed to both crimes. A third incident at a downtown nightclub called The Groove, however, produced a shell casing that led police to re-examine all the robbery/homicides. Police later determined that all three crimes were committed using the same gun.
Police eventually picked up one Ahmir Cole, 23, a former star running back from Seneca High School and Buffalo State College. Cole was playing for the “Erie Freeze,” part of the American Indoor Football League (AIFL), this spring. He carried 26 yards for the Freeze just six days before the grocery store shooting.
Police can’t figure out why the victims were shot after the goods had been procured. “The robbery was already committed and they had what they wanted. Why would you shoot the person? There’s no need to,” said Buffalo DA Frank J. Clark.
The AIFL uses red, white, and blue footballs. It was founded in 2005 and currently features 16 teams. Until recently, one could buy a franchise for just $125,000.
