The prosecution in the James Galante trial have released portions of three wiretapped conversations involving James Galante and one of his henchmen discussing how they must get former UHL linesman Jim Harper to recant his complaint that Galante assaulted him after a 2005 Trashers playoff game. The third and best recording is of a Galante "associate" talking directly to UHL Commissioner Richard Brosal on the Harper recantation. Listen as the Galante "associate" and Brosal both agree that this phone conversation they were having never took place. Why Brosal was not indicted as well is beyond rational. At the very least Richard Brosal should be considered an unindicted co-conspirator unless he was also granted immunity for testifying at the grand jury like Brent Gretzky.

Brosel Brosel Brosel
Three times?, well, four if you count the thread title....Yikes. It's Brosal, and I applaud the way he does his job under the circumstances, and if the BOG didn't think so, he wouldn't have a job.

Normally I type my posts in my email and then run them through the DNT spell check system and then cut and paste. Had I done that it would have caught the incorrect spelling of Commissioner Brosal's name. I went with a direct thread as I wanted to get this link up ASAP so everyone can hear Brosal conspire to cover this situation with a known felon Ciro Viento. Even my editor sometimes gives me grief on spelling.

As far as you "applauding" Brosal, that is meant solely to illicite a response from me. Everyone who has anything to do with the UHL knows that it is strictly a cash and carry league and Brosal survives solely because of the bounty he brings to the table from each ownership group that wants in. Only a fool would dispute that the inmates run the asylum over at UHL HQ. If you have the funds Brosal will approve a team for your backyard rink without so much as paying the rink a visit.

Brian Werger the UHL PR guy recently was quoted as saying "Really?" when told the Danbury Ice Arena only holds 2.132 according to the Danbury Fire Marshal's Office despite the Trashers continuously reporting 3000 + attendance. The Marshal's office was asked if they could squeeze in 3000 and their reply was "absolutely not." The entire Trashers operation is one lie after the next and when you listen to Brosal agreeing with a felon that their call "never took place" only a fool could stand behind Brosal. I have not met one other beat writer that has a kind word to say about Brosal. You sir are in the distinct minority. But go ahead and continue to wave Brosal's flag. It truly shows you have no clue on how this league operates.

Richard Brosal does have my respect, he saved my team, the Missouri River Otters in the middle of 03'-04' before the Danbury Trashers were ever thought of. He couldn't quite pull it off this time, but he tried very hard. I am grateful to him. But as far as just saying something to illicite a response from you, I could care less what you think or what happened to your team.

UHL loses 2 more teams
By Craig DeVrieze | Tuesday, June 13, 2006 |
The United Hockey League lost its fourth and fifth teams of a turbulent offseason when franchises in Adirondack, N.Y., and Danbury, Conn., suspended operations Monday.

Quad-City Mallards president Tim Taylor said the league will proceed with 10 teams for the 2006-2007 season.

“Disappointed,’’ Taylor said of his reaction to the news that Adirondack and Danbury had followed Richmond, Roanoke Valley, Missouri and Motor City into offseason oblivion.

Still, he said, a smaller, more geographically centered league could be better for the remaining clubs.

“I am a firm believer that bigger isn’t always better,’’ Taylor said.

Taylor indicated the Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals should be able to play despite being the lone survivor from last year’s five-team East Coast contingent.

Elmira is a 61/2 hours east of Port Huron, Mich., and 71/2 hours from Flint, he noted.

Taylor said a dispersal draft of players from Adirondack and Danbury will be held on Thursday.

Next Monday, the league’s Board of Governors will meet in Las Vegas to discuss potential rule changes that could include a switch to a vigorously enforced hard salary cap in place of the soft cap/luxury tax system that has been in place in recent years.

Taylor hinted the league’s brutal offseason is evidence a change in philosophies and enforcement is necessary.

“The harsh reality is we have now seen five teams in the league go dark,’’ he said. “I think this will give us further reasons to go with a hard cap that is enforced.

“Whether we are 10 teams or 20, we need to be in this together. I think we are seeing how brutal this business can be if you don’t have the right pieces to the puzzle.’’

Adirondack closed its doors after a new lease agreement could not be reached with the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Arena. That caused potential buyer David Wright to withdraw an offer to assume majority ownership from ESPN announcers Barry Melrose and Steve Levy.

Danbury’s decision to suspend operations came four days after both the team and its owner, James Galante, were indicted in a federal racketerring investigation.

Among lesser crimes, the indictment alleged Galante had spent $750,000 on Trashers salaries in 2004-2005, or $475,000 more than the league limit.

According to the federal indictment, Galante paid Trashers players, and in some cases their wives, for jobs they didn’t perform for his trash-hauling business, Automated Waste Disposal, Inc.

League commissioner Richard Brosal — who told the Quad-City Times the Trashers were a UHL “member in good standing’’ after Galante’s Friday arrest — said in a Monday statement that Danbury went dark in response to Adirondack’s decision.

“Without their closest geographical rival in the league, the Trashers made a financial decision to suspend their operations,” Brosal said in the three-paragraph statement.

The commissioner did not return a phone call from the Quad-City Times on Monday night.

Danbury finished second in the Colonial Cup playoffs last month with a team that featured more than 3,000 games of Triple-A hockey experience, but which Brosal in March told a Connecticut grand jury was “in line’’ with the league’s salary cap.

Danbury’s departure affects former Mallards head coach Paul Gillis, who left the Quad-Cities last year to take the Trashers reins.

Taylor said the loss of jobs was one of the saddest results of Monday’s news.

“Colleagues are out of jobs,’’ he said. “There are fans in two more cities who aren’t going to get to watch what I think is the greatest game on earth. There are 40 more players who are going to be looking for work. Arena workers are out of jobs. It just goes on and on.’’
