I got the word when I picked up my morning newspaper on May 6... AF2 was coming to my town, our own team. I was so excited, first professional football team ever in Alaska. Best we've had up until now is high school football, which gets cold ass in October with snow and all... Indoors in a climate controlled 70 degrees with fast paced football and high scoring setup works for me just fine... There is not much passing up here for HS football, mostly its dominated by running teams and hard-nosed defense. The owner of the Alaska Wild, Dave Weatherholt, said that "ideally it should be an all-Alaska team" which means that all our locals are gonna get a shot to try out and play for us.... which is the way I think it should be, no imports... I may be over excited, just a little, but its about time I have something I can root for, we have the ECHL champion Alaska Aces hockey team, a couple of AAAAAAAAA non affiliated baseball teams.... some college baskeball and hockey... but nothing close to football, the true sport I love, looking forward to next year, take it easy on the newbies guys, don't blow us out too bad.

Anchorage should be an excellent af2 market. No real competition for the sports entertainment dollar except for the Glacier Pilots, a nice 6,000-seat Sullivan Arena (presuming the Wild don't play at Ben Boeke), and a city of 250,000 that used to give great support for the Northern Knights CBA team when they were playing at West High's gym in the 1980's. The travel costs can be a killer for any Alaska sports team, but I like af2's chances given all the positives going in.

If the Wild management are smart, they'll head down to Spokane and ask the Shock people how they do what they do. Skip Everett.

I was hoping for a more exciting name...like Fighting Caribou or something. But yeah, this should be an excellent AF2 market. I look forward to following them next year. Make sure they get a radio partner and do netcats. I can't tell you how fun it was staying up til 3 or 4 in the morning here on the east coast, listening to the Hawaii games :)
