Why was Brent Gretzky given full immunity in his testimony before a New Haven, CT Grand Jury investigating James Galante? If Gretzky did nothing wrong why would he need immunity? Want to bet he was one of the players receiving extra money above the salary cap from Galante's trash hauling business? Could that be why Gretzky "disappeared" late in the 2004/2005 season with a very very mysterious injury? Perhaps some diligent Elmira based reporter can question Gretzky about why he received immunity from prosecution in exchange for his testimony before the grand jury...What did he do wrong?

In fairness, being granted immunity is not an admission that you've done anything wrong. Gretzky's attorney may have requested it as a matter of course, and the grand jury saw no harm in granting it because they weren't looking at Gretzky for anything anyway.

That, in and of itself, is a violation of league rules and not of any federal laws (unless of course, the extra income isn't reported to the IRS). You could argue that the said players were performing some work not associated with hockey or acting in a promotional capacity for the trash hauling business.

Several years ago in an adjoining county (in something out of a Sopranos episode), we had a New Jersey Mafia-connected guy actually buy the McPherson County, Kansas, landfill (arguing it would be more efficiently run as a private business). The guy was dumping hazardous waste from back east without proper licences. He wound up going to federal prison and the county got its landfill back (but was stuck with very expensive clean-up bills).
As far as I know, no one in that scandal was associated with minor league hockey.
There was a pro soccer team in the late 70s, early 80s in Columbus, Ohio, that was used to launder Mafia money. The team won the old ASL title then promptly folded.
