I saw an article that stated the new VP of Team Operations is Bred Hester. The article stated that his prior experience is working at Lowes, does anybody know anything about his basketball background because the article never went into that.

The owners are at the ABA meeting in Chicago this weekend. I just found out that Brad Hester is Joe Newman's son or son-in-law. But, I don't think he has any basketball experience because he could not answer any questions about consulting with the team. He will be responsible for getting the schedules done. Now Joe has his daughter as VP of Merchandising, wife as VP of Finance (she signs all ABA checks, I saw a check for the team to travel to a make up game), and daughter is President of the Salute program. That is a family affair!

Scott. I have had enough of you to last me a lifetime. You are a miserable person.
Do me a favor. Write to David Stern and ask him to send you a list of all of the NBA teams and their insurance plans. Then, ask him about any single person in the NBA.
And, do you know what his answer will be? None. Because he will know you are an absolute jerk. And unlike me, he's smart enough to ignore you. There are no members of my family on the ABA payroll. And just like everything else you write - it is fabricated nonsense. Punk.

In a strange way I agree with him, he can't insure that teams pay their insurance because their system can't insure teams will last a full season, every year half the teams fold so that 50% of the league that does not pay insurance right there. All he can do is ensure they have insurance when the season starts, the owners must make the monthly payments. In the end when players get hurt the teams they play for will just fold, and it will be business as usual in the ABA
You think Newman has auditors who can verify that? Fat chance.
Of course, most of the leagues we talk about on OSC probably don't.

By law they have to provide workers comp or self insure as a group (aba owners), most likely no insurance company will insure a basketball team in it's first year so they would have to get insurance from the state. These jokers most likely only pay 6 players and screw the rest of the players or pay them under the table, in order to get personal umbrella policies on their homeowners insurance at low cost in order to meet the ABA's requirements without dealing with the state department of insurance. Then if one of the players that isn't being paid or is paid under the table gets hurt the team will simply fold and file corporate bankruptcy. His whole plan is to keep selling off as many markets as he can each year, unlike other league that collect huge expansion fees and collect monthly dues from each member. He has to keep getting people to ante up in order to make money, so he reduces up front cost and looks the other way if they (cash strapped owners) avoid the state's department of insurance. If he made everyone get insurance from an A+ insurance company 90% of his target market would not be able to meet his basic coverage standards and if they self insured he would go belly up because half of his teams fold within 6 months and most(if not all) of the other owners can't afford to pay some other owners insurance claims or law suits after each unsuccessful ABA owner folds.
His system (scheme) does not allow for him to scrutinize owners business practices, he is operating a extremely loose confederacy. Other sports league practice socialist principles, but not the ABA. This league is truly unadulterated capitalism, that's why the RazorSharks are staying put, they don't have to pay the league anything, as long as the fans show up they will turn a profit. CBA and NBDL teams have to pay into their socialist systems each month as well as protect players and the community from two bit con-artist and idiots that masquerade as team owners, yet like most socialist entities they develop high debt and need to be subsubsidized by corporations, the community or both.

I don't think many teams had insurance. As I understand it, the league is owned by Commissioner Newman only and the teams don't have any ownership in the league. There are no rules to abide by, that is why teams can play without uniforms, be late to games, cancel games, ect. The league won't hand out fines because they can't. The league does not sell franchises, it just "make owners believe" that they are franchises. AAU is organized better, and the sad thing is that the players think that they are protected and will be expose. Our owner realized that the NBA says the ABA teams are "off limits" meaning NO players from the ABA will ever get call up to the NBA again. This is more like a recreational league, no insurance. I never saw any. Play for the love of the game, play for food, play for housing, while the big wigs of the league get all the credit and profit.

Good catch. No coincidence. And do you really think he would not pay his own children for work they do. I guarantee you he is paying them. But, what audit can you do. His wife is the controller! Jennifer Hester's daughter sings at all the ABA events, against the host wishes.

This is changing this year. The league will be going public, supposedly this fall. As I mentioned in another post, their is a venture cap firm using it's resources to add substance to the league. Next year the plan is to raise the "franchising" fee to ~$50,000. Whether either of these things will help the league is anyones guess. This year may still be a mess, but perhaps come '07 things will be looking up.
It will be nice NOT having Joe Newman in full control of the league. Maybe now it can get proper guidance.

Damn it hurts when you can't get your story straight:
ABARWB-
Thought you might find this interesting. Are there any other cousins, nephews, etc. in the Newman family tree looking for work???

Thank you for the email. Jennifer is Brad's sister-in-law. They are both very bright, articulate, capable young people and we are thrilled to have both as part of the ABA.
Ricardo left because he felt the CBA was a better opportunity. We wish him well.
Appreciate the interest.

Mr. Newman-
I think the idea of a person devoted to getting the teams set up the right way is a good one. Is Brad Hester any relation to Jennifer Hester of the Salute program? Just curious.
Also, why did Ricardo leave the ABA for the CBA? He seemed to be to co-leader of the league with you. How are you going to replace him and his marketing ideas, experience, etc.?
Thanks, and best of luck...
Oops - :p :p :p
Aside from the Ricardo brush-off, welcome to the next ABA management meeting - AKA, the Newman family Thanksgiving table.
How many sides of one's mouth can someone speak out from?

Many. I heard about the meeting too. There have been so many promises about the ABA capitalizing, going public, ect. But none every turns out. My knowledge about public companies is limited, but I do know that there is FULL disclosure. And the ABA does not want that I am sure. Where is the money being spent, the reservation money paid to the league.
As far as the brush off, our owner thinks highly of Ricardo Richardson. He said that Ricardo was and is the ABA. He did the scheduling, over and over during the season as teams would fold, and he handled all corporate sponsorships, worked with all the good teams and really made the ABA what it is today. And, he was the only one that can be reach on the weekends when there were scheduling problems. He bled red, white and blue. I also am aware that the owners wanted him to take over the league and Mr. Newman did not. All of the ideas that were discussed at the league meeting were introduced before.
But, Commissioner Newman wanted him gone after the whole Florida Pitbull thing when Mr. Richardson did not speak up against Mr. Ford, because Mr. Ford was right about the ABA. I heard that the Commissioner had a personal issue with him after that. Richardson brought in our owner, who is contemplating leaving because he believes the league is in trouble, since Richardson left. I feel for the other players in the league. I was fortunate enough to be able to work in insurance with my degree, but alot of guys don't have that chance. It's a real shame.

That might finally get the ship to sink so somebody can form a true ABA. I doubt anybody will invest in such a mickey mouse operation.
