Looks like the CBA will be holding on another year. Looks like it might be better than ever.
While teams are probably trying out for NBDL bids, it shoudl be an exciting year.
Your take?

While things are starting to look better for the CBA, it's still not 100% sure if Rockford & Michigan are returning. Plus there's always the possibility that Rochester & Buffalo of the ABA will join the league. Either way, the CBA will have at least 8 teams for the 2006-07 season, if not more.

My take? I think the Gary Steelheads should sit this season out. Why?
1) They will need to go through the hassle of finding another coach soon.
2) Cash subsidies from Gary taxpayers is not a bottomless pit to draw from.
3) It's late June, thus it's too late to start any quality marketing.
4) The Steelheads want to switch to the NBADL after this season anyway.

If the Steelheads don't play that will leave Yakima (and may Rockford) as the only real team left. All the others will be filled with D-2 talent, who wants to watch that?

I am confused as to why you think all the new teams will have D-2 type talent? Many of the new teams will have the same quality if not better than some of last years teams.
If you took the top 4 final ABA teams last year, a couple of the teams had players that would have do very well in the CBA.
I wonder how you can evaluate the talent without knowing who will be coming into the league?

Of the three new teams only one played last year San Jose in the ABA. The Skyrockets were a good team, they had a record of 31-6 but the ABA is A ball. The CBA is just a step below the NBA. In fact one of the teams that left for the D-League, Idaho had 5 former NBA players on it’s roster:Chenowith, Davis, Freije, Livington and Washington plus a future NBA player in Sanchez. No ABA team had that amount of talent so I’m confused why you believe the new teams will have the same quality if not better than the teams that exited the league.
I have looked over the rosters of the ABA’s top four teams and I believe each would have had a hard time winning 20 games in the CBA last year.
I doubt if the San Jose group will hire 6 former NBA players total for it’s three teams combined let alone one team. However you are correct when you stated that I do not know the exact amount of talent that will be coming into the league because the rosters have not been formed.
I’m basing my assumptions on that fact that the new teams are being run by a former ABA organization.

Dude, That assumption is like saying a head coach in NCAA D3 that put together a very good team on that level, can't go to D1 and put together a competitive roster on that level. I believe that guard play in the ABA was just as good as guard play in the CBA. Now, bigs is another story. The CBA was much better. Talent that will be attracted to the CBA will NOT be attracted to the ABA. I think that San Jose will be competitive as is the teams in Butte and Great Falls.
I also heard that Florida Pitbulls, So Cal Legends, Rochester Razorsharks, and Indiana Alleycats, and Los Angeles (new team) are in discussions with the CBA to add their teams. Ike Austin and Utah Snowbears may be fielding a team as well. Are you telling me that Indiana, Florida, Rochester and So Cal won't be able to be competitive agains Yakama, Gary, and other teams? Gary Grant and Tim Hardaway are NBA guys and they know how to recruit good talent. Holla!

The top ABA teams could not stay within 20 of the top five CBA teams last year. They could have played with Dakota, Michigan and Albany but those teams sucked. Inglewood and Azuza don't look like good ideas to me. I can't see either one of those teams lasting more than two seasons. The Pitbulls don't have anywhere to play (maybe Maimi Arena or Edwards Hall) so the same goes for them, now the Alley cats and the Razorsharks could make the jump and compete for the title within two to three years if they could get more talent. But right now Yakima would destroy all those teams by 30 to 40 pts. As for the Snowbears, I hope the CBA does not allow them into the League, they would pull no shows at playoff games and all of that crazy nonsense.

..were competitive. I basically agree with the comments on the different levels.
In the ABA, how can you recruit players when you don't know if your division mates are going to show for the games? Not one ABA team played a full 36-game schedule, and nobody gets called up, so what is the incentive for the better players that are dreaming of the NBA or top-flight teams in Europe.
Not so in the CBA. Even without the working agreement, CBA players continue to get called up. Duke can recruit players Marist can't dream of.
As for Gary, even if they end up in the D-League, why would David Stern take an inactive franchise over an active one? The reason he wanted Sioux Falls, Dakota and Idaho was because they are active, successful minor league teams.

Why would David Stern take an inactive franchise over an active one? Money, that's why. The NBADL did not accept an active Gary this year because the franchise looked flakey. Why did Gary look so flakey? Money (or the lack thereof). Last year's late start (July) didn't help matters either. Most of THIS year's money would be better spent completing the pedestrian walkways that will link the downtown sports venues (Genesis Center, Hudson-Campbell Fitness Center, and US Steel Yard). The rest of this year's money should be used for marketing and improving the Genesis Center. ENOUGH OF THIS LAST MINUTE STUFF. Gary can restart as an organization with a fresh batch of taxpayer money in 2007-2008. If the money looks right at that time, I doubt the NBADL will be picky.

Any update? I think the Indiana Alley Cats would join the CBA if Rockford and Gary stay, making a nice division.

Sorry, but the D-League sucks. It is totally political and this whole allocation nonsense is the stupidest idea in sports, When they expand to 30 teams that league is going to be watered down garbage (unless they increase the pay scale). Plus, Hoffman Estates will be granted an expansion franchise. Gary will not get in, the Steelheads should see if last year creates some excitement and stick it out in the CBA. The Genesis needs a tenent why imporve the place if it is not being used, the NBA is not doing to let the Steelheads in.

I agree. D-League ball is some of the worst basketball I've seen, but Steelheads COO Jewell Harris, Jr wants it. Now that the CBA has become ABA2, I'm certain owner Jewell Sr wants it too. Whatever happens in Hoffman Estates will not affect Gary though. These two locations are very close to Chicago, but at the same time they are worlds apart.
The Genesis Center WILL have a tenant. It's in Gary's downtown redevelopment plan to have winter and summer pro sports. Eventually the winter sport will be UHL hockey, but for now the push is for D-League basketball (and the mid-con NCAA tournament, but that's another story).
It sounds strange, but Gary will make a much better hockey town than basketball town.

You are right, The Hoffman Estates team will not affect Gary from a fan perspective but it will due to it's affiliation with the Bulls, the Pacers will not use Gary as an affiliate. I hear Fort Wayne is a lock to align with the Pacers. So the NBA will not take Gary anyway. If the Steelheads leave then I can't see Rockford continuing, which will kill any hopes for a midwest division. The CBA really needs Gary.
