We talk so often about which leagues are struggling in indoor football (http://www.oursportscentral.com/boards/showthread.php?t=2896#) that I wondered if it might be helpful to devise a system to rate them. For instance, what if we devised a scale such as the below and rated each team in the league on it. Add up the points and divide by the number of teams in the league. The lower a league's point average, the stronger the league.</span>

a) Team folded during season: 5 points
b) Team no longer playing home or road games (1): 4 points
c) Team forced to change ownership during season (2): 3 points
d) Team has or is drawing less than 1,000 for a home game: 2 points
e) Other negative stories hitting the media: 1 point

(1) Includes teams replaced by semipro squads
(2) Not all ownership changes are penalized, only those in which the team was struggling

If a team scores on one of the higher categories, such as "Team no longer playing home or road games" for 4 points, it cannot score on a lower one.

Let's take the Intense Football League as an example:

CenTex Barracudas - 0
Corpus Christi Hammerheads - 0
Laredo Lobos - 2 - I believe they drew less than 1,000 for a home game (because they score on that criteria, we ignore the negative media story on the coach and GM being replaced)
Louisiana Swashbucklers - 0
Odessa Roughnecks - 0
San Angelo Stampede Express - 0

The total points (2) are divided by the number of league teams (6), that gives us a league strength rating of .33

Anyone want to apply the criteria to other leagues?

Let's look at the GLIFL next. Unfortunately, I haven't seen too many GLIFL attendances to see where they score there.

Battle Creek Crunch - 0
Lehigh Valley Outlawz - 0
Marion Mayhem - 0
New York/New Jersey Revolution - 4 (traveling teams always get a 4)
Port Huron Pirates - 0
Rochester Raiders - 0

The total points (4) are divided by the number of league teams (6), that gives us a league strength rating of .67

So far we have:
IFL - .33
GLIFL - .67

Well early on I guess we have the two of the strongest leagues, IFL and GLIFL. I have seen the GLIFL and I would say that is the strongest league. The only reason the Revolution is a traveling team is because they didn't have enough time to find a home venue. The league knew this team wouldn't fold midseason so they let them have one season as a traveling team while they found a home venue for 2007. So that situation isn't so bad. Can't wait to see what the other leagues are like though.
