ASK THE CEO - COULD AN ABA TEAM COMPETE WITH THE NBA?

18-Apr-2006
Question from Richard W, Detroit: (paraphrased): "Do you think an ABA team could compete with an NBA team? How skilled are your players?"

Answer: Richard. Thank you for the question. I seem to be getting as many NBA questions as ABA questions. Quite honestly, I do believe that ABA teams could compete with NBA teams. I also think our rules make the game faster and more fun - and emphasize team play more. For the money, along with great high school and college games, we think its the best basketball sports entertainment value around.

However, I will quote from a recent article written in the New York Times by Mike Wise. "...the multi-millionaires (NBA players) will laugh and dunk; the league's officials (NBA officials) will step to the microphones and recount again how popular the sport has become... What will go unspoken, publicly at least, is what many players, coaches, team officials and others who follow the sport are talking about among themselves: that the game - the nuts and bolts of the players as well as the sublime choreography of teamwork is ailing. League statistics show that fewer and fewer players shoot very well, and coaches and team executives believe that the fallout results in part from the proliferation of teenage players entering the National Basketball Association. A handful of teams have won barely one-fifth of their games, leaving players and coaches complaining that too many games on too many nights have been stripped of their basic competitiveness..."

"...it's a concern that has been building for several seasons, but in recent months some of the games most prominent players and coaches have spoken with remarkable bluntness about the diminished quality of all-around performance and thus of the NBA's nightly product."

There's much more - but bottom line - yes, we believe our teams are competitive and our players can compete at the highest levels. And fans can enjoy ABA basketball at family-friendly, fan-friendly affordable prices. And we sincerely believe that if the NBA would give a few of our players a chance, they could improve the quality of the teams.

If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.

This is probably one of the most funniest statements I've read about the ABA. Just hysterical!!!!

There is comedy, there is high comedy, and there are the grandiose pronouncements from the Indianapolis basement bunker of Joe Newman.

Quite honestly, I do believe that ABA teams could compete with NBA teams.

Since few ABA teams actually compete with other ABA teams on a regular basis, we have no real way of knowing...

coaches and team executives believe that the fallout results in part from the proliferation of teenage players entering the National Basketball Association

Let's keep in mind that very recently Joe once again blasted the NBA's age limitation, saying that teenagers should be allowed to play in the NBA - those same ones he happily points out here in Wise's quote are ruining the skill level in the NBA. That would be endorsing both sides of the same argument, no???

A handful of teams have won barely one-fifth of their games, leaving players and coaches complaining that too many games on too many nights have been stripped of their basic competitiveness...

This from a league that had less teams active than it had playoff spots, and had a number of 2-win teams compete in the post-season. And while some NBA games may be "stripped of their competitiveness," those games are played as scheduled, as opposed to the "36 games is just a rough estimate; any number will do" ABA schedule.

And we sincerely believe that if the NBA would give a few of our players a chance, they could improve the quality of the teams.

While there are quality players in the ABA, does anyone really think that if an NBA team thought an ABA player could help them, they would have called him up in a heartbeat? Also, while Joe is begging AGAIN for the NBA to call - he is accountable to the ABA players who did perform at a high level, but because the legaue failed to enforce accurate stat-keeping, never posted team statistics, and gave these players a blank entry on their playing resumes without the necessary basic information that any high school, rec league or YMCA can provide at a moment's notice.

Good to see Joe still in mid-season form...

Let's be honest here.

The worst NBA team would beat the best ABA team by at least 50 points. The ABA teams simply do not have the talent. Mr. Newman seems to be in his own little world (he seems to be in Wonderland with the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter looking for Alice).

I doubt there is anyone in the ABA who could play in the NBA right now except MAYBE (just MAYBE) as the last player on the bench of a team on a 10-day contract filling in for an injured player. Otherwise you'd see the NBA teams purchasing the contracts of ABA players — and how many times has that happened in the last six years?

If the RimRockers had a hard time transitioning to the NBDL from the ABA....there's no way in hell an ABA team could be competitive with the ABA.

A
..the interns get paid, unlike most of the players..lol

ASK THE CEO - INTERNS?

20-Apr-2006
Question from Chris from NJ: "I saw your notice about the ABA intern program. Have to ask the question. Do ABA interns get paid?"

Answer: Chris. Thanks for the question. The answer is that in most cases, yes, interns can make good money while learning the business of basketball. Successful teams have very good marketing programs that are part of the internship programs which include ticket sales, sponsorships, ABA Fast Break Club, ABA Coupon Books, Media Sales, ABA Entertainment, etc. Teams try to involve their interns in these various programs along with things like public and community relations, tryout camps, game day operations, radio/TV, web site management, etc. But the important thing is that young people getting into sports need to recognize that in addition to the game of basketball is the business of basketball. And successful operations start with good business operations. ABA internships could be a great learning experience with good financial rewards. It is worth checking out. Please send your resumes to joenewman@abalive.com and I will get it to the teams. If you have a question, same place.

this guy NEEDS to be called out

Really tho, people only need to be called out if a certain group of people actually take what they say seriously (i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Al Franken, etc). Does anyone take Joe seriously to begin with?

Okey dokey...
:Continuously, we will update our website with the latest polyphonic ringtones so you can always have both today's current hits and the greatest hits of all time on your cell phone

But, they are unable to provide an accurate schedule, any semblance of a statistical record for any players, or reflect what teams are actually active at any one time.

Good to see the priorities are being addressed. Will they have "send in the Clowns' available to download ("don't bother, they're here...")?

Why would anyone on God's green Earth, want wallpaper of an ABA team on their cell phone? Maybe the ring tones are the soothing sounds of crickets at night........much like the sound of most ABA games where there are more janitors at the high school gym than there are people in the stands.

Obviously this snake oil salesman Joe Newman has something going on for himself. There doesn't seem to be a lack of potential franchise owners willing to hand Joe a check to play in a league where there might be games or might not be games.

I think I have the problem of why teams never play the same amount of games, or don't play at all. I think the ABA only owns 2 red/white and blue basketballs, thereby limiting the number of games played on any given day.
