Each division has its own playoff structure. In order to try to fit all the series in and have reduced lag time in between series, some of them have to be shorter than the other. The shorter distances between teams in the North and South Divisions also helps facilitate the quarterfinal. Considering how the West division has 6 teams like the North, I could see giving them a quarterfinal slot, but maybe the division owners vetoed this. Also, considering how playoff births are based solely on finish in division, it is fair then to give more teams a birth out East, because that gives them about as good a shot proportionately as a team out West.

i get all that, i'm calling BOGUS! isn't the team at the end of the season, with the most pts., the division champ? so you really dont need those playoffs. the top 8 teams go. if the nhl can do it thata way why not the ECHL!!

1) Divisional playoffs cut down on travel-always good, especially in a league that spans the country.
2) NHL used to have Divisional playoffs-top 4 in each division get in. AHL has divisional playoffs now.
3) If you'll look closely at the standings, no team got "leapfrogged" this year in the league (i.e. the top 19 teams total ended up getting in, the six that missed out were the bottom six in points).
4) I believe playoff format is up to the owners in the division, if you have a complaint, take it up with them.
5) As for that division champ line-you're new to the ECHL, so you probably haven't heard about the Brabham curse yet. Trust me, ECHL playoffs are riddled with upsets and top seeds have trouble moving on. (case in point, that "Alaska-Las Vegas" ECHL championship series you were carrying on about earlier is on life support right now [although it'd be pretty much dead if they had a five game series to be equal with the East])
6) The goal is to maybe have the playoffs done before July, 7 game series in addition to the quarterfinal "play in" round would start taking up too much time.

Aren't you happy now that the West chose to play 7 game series?
