Okay, this was the most recent Ask the CEO:

ASK THE CEO - 3-10 & OUT RULE?

06-Apr-2006
Question from Jose R, Los Angeles, CA (and others): "Would you please explain the 3-10 and Out Overtime Rule that was used in the Indiana-Long Island playoff game?"

Answer: Jose. Not sure how you heard about that unless you might have heard the game done by Derrick Pearson on radio. It was one of the most exciting basketball games I ever saw and the rule worked beautifully (for Strong Island anyway). The game ended in a tie in regulation time. We had a 3-minute running clock overtime period (only one time out for each team) and all players were eligible to play. At the end of the three minutes, the score was still tied. The first team to ten would win in the second overtime. Indiana went up 8-5 and needed only a basket to win. But, Indiana fouled Strong Island on a 3-point shot, the Sound player made the 3 free throws, tieing the score at 8 apiece. Indiana had the ball. The Indiana player lost the ball out of bounds; it went over to SI. The SI player was fouled and made 2 free throws - and Strong Island upset the co-#1 ranked Alley Cats. The crowd went wild and this certainly validated one of the best rules the ABA has - 3-10 and Out. The entire double overtime took about 10 minutes to play and every second was exciting. I am sure that Derrick must have captured the excitement on the radio. There were about 2200 people at the Blue Cross Arena but you would have thought there were 20,000 from the noise. A great rule. Hope this answers your questions.

This is probably the greatest Joe-spin in at least two weeks.

That's funny... this photograph I took of Strong Island's celebration after the 2-overtime game:

And it's the same photo that appears on the Strong Island Sound website:

Now I'm not trying to clown the league, far from it. But the "2200" people in the building were for the entire four games, which the lion's share of that coming for Rochester's victory over the Atlanta Vision.

I was at all four games that day. Strong Island and Indiana did play a thrilling double-overtime contest. And it was seen by 29 people in the stands. That's right - twenty-nine people. Most of those were other teams scouting the competition, some family members for the Alley Cats, and a couple of guys in Section 125 who had the day off from work.

I caught that one too. While I'm sure those folks were loud, I -- like most of the 2,200 -- caught the last two games due to work. It's an interesting rule though; albeit one that will be used rarely due to the likelihood of such an event.
