Food for thought:
If enough unpaid players and coaches get mad, maybe they'll get new bills passed that forbid sports leagues from forming without adequate capital.
Surprised there are still many players and coaches that report to these camps year-after-year without the awareness the team they are trying out for is in a league that consistently bounces checks.

Congress does NOT want to set that precedent. So many of our congresspeople were motivated to run in the first place because previous and current laws were/are perceived to stifle the dreams of the "committed."
We can make all the guffaws we want about that comment, except that we actually did vote for them, probably because they highlighted issues other than their true motivations in their campaigns. Heck, in some cases, we probably agree with them.

CoS:
Would you want to see Congress pass a law that would require other small businesses to prove a certain minimum of capital before being allowed to incorporate

Not following you guys.
Laws for professional sports leagues, only.
A barber shop/Hallmark Card store doesn't have to commit to a 16 week season. You get your service that day and you're gone. The customer doesn't commit to service that runs 16 consecutive weeks for a haircut or exclusive shopping at some card store like a typical indoor football league.
Can you explain what you mean?

Yes, in the home improvement areas. Scams galore. Do we already have legal rights to a potential private plumber or home improvement company's debt/equity ratio before they start to cut-up your house?
Major League Baseball has that anti-trust clause with our government.

Just what we need: an assault on the free enterprise system.
Next, you'll make appliance stores, used car dealers, and loan sharks post some kind of bond before they are allowed to do business.
If I want to start a football team, sell tickets, sell sponsorships, hire players and other employees, then run off to Florida with all the dough, why should the government get involved?
Buyer Beware
It's the American way!
Seriously... Do you really want yet another government bureacracy to be in charge of the minor league sports industry? Instead, I'd rather see the thing you keep preaching: Arenas should do their homework on leagues and owners before allowing them to sign a lease. If they cannot prove adequate capitalization, don't do business with them.

Holy mackerel. We agree!
